Lame duck commissioner, Cam Parry, took the curious step of inviting Bob Main to a debate on the topic of hiring an administrator to manage the day to day affairs of the county. Main is running for reelection and one of the main differences between he and his opponent, Fred Messerle, revolves around hiring an administrator. Messerle wants to centralize control of the county’s twenty four departments under a single appointed administrator while Main prefers to maintain the current troika form of governance. So why would Parry want to debate Main when the real players will be debating in public forums this month before the election? Parry is irrelevant just like what Jon Barton and Al Pettit think is irrelevant. Hopefully Main won’t waste his time or energy debating Parry, of all people, a candy coated promoter who has no credibility with anyone, and hold the argument for his opponent. If Messerle really wants this government change let him sell it himself rather than sending in his minions to do it for him.

But, as it turns out, much of our lively banter was rendered pointless at yesterday’s Commissioner Forum. Both Bob Main and Fred Messerle agreed that the County is dipping into dwindling reserves, all six candidates publicly opposed the Charter (even the two who signed the Charter petition), and all six publicly supported development of the North Spit and LNG.

Well, this conversation has gone every which way. I am getting on here late but I don’t see any one mentioning the ARRRG charter. If people want a more direct democracy isn’t that what they are offering? Is it even on the table for anyone out here?
I certainly don’t feel represented by most anyone in government. And why people are not taking GCC (Global Climate Change) seriously? It should be a part of every debate and anyone representing ‘the people’, especially anyone living on the coast. — any and every coast.

And would you have told those department heads that the company would be infinitely more successful if all of you didn’t speak to each other – other than an occasional “hello” in the hallway? And that rave success could only be achieved if they didn’t speak with their department employees as well?
So why are you in favor of keeping this ridiculously inept structure intact at the County? I understand Main’s motivation: he likes the paycheck. But there’s nothing in this for you – it’s about the employees first and foremost, and maximizing dwindling taxpayer dollars.

Rickey – you’re assuming Bob would want to debate Fred on this issue. I don’t think he wants to debate either of them in an open forum. The only thing he can say is that the position is “another layer of government” that would be “unaccountable”.
I’ve had a lot of people work for me over the years and the ones that were “unaccountable” weren’t around long. Since this position would report to the Commissioners I’m confused as to why Bob would conclude that an Administrator would be “unaccountable”. The only thing I can conclude from that remark is that Bob would manage the Adminstrator like he does his departments: absentee management. The “layer of government” comment would take about five minutes to dismantle.
SusanP – when did we say the voters weren’t “intelligent enough” to decide on an Administrator? That’s a complete fabrication. What we said was that the Commissioners didn’t need voter approval to hire an Administrator any more than they need voter approval to hire a friend at $50 an hour – as an example – or a maintenance person in the Parks Dept.
The Structure Committee presented a myriad of reasons as to why the County needs an Administrator – all valid and substantiated. Why, a full year later, are there uncollected property taxes sitting in boxes considering the financial condition of the County? Why did no less than seven ELECTED Commissioners allow the Solid Waste facility to decline? Even when the money was there, no one was setting aside the necessary maintenance accruals. Why not? Why was the IT department allowed to decline? Why hasn’t the Sheriff’s department been reorganized? Why isn’t maintenance centralized? When was the last time all the County Department managers met together in a room to discuss challenges and possible solutions? (I don’t expect the exact day – just the year.)
When you find the answers to these problems you’ll also find the rationale for an Administrator.

Al, it wasn’t long ago that you, your pals Barton and Slater sat in the same Bice studio and told us citizens that we were not intelligent enough to vote on the county administrator matter. What caused us to get smart enough for your pals Messerle and Parry to trust us voting on the matter, albeit an advisory vote?
I’d be VERY surprised if Main put himself in a position that required he defend his stance in a two way stage. He’s more comfortable sitting in the studio with Jim Bice – safe from inquiring minds.
Main can’t be dumb enough to fall for this. His answer must be I will debate Messerle anywhere on the matter. It’s Messerles child. Remember he referred to himself as “the sidewinder” who gave birth to this idea. Messerle has hidden behind his surrogates for more than a year. Let Ronnie Herne debate Parry. She will win. Parry should fade away – and soon. He demonstrates more every week that he is a zero. Win or lose the debate, Messerle wins by being silent. I understand that station KCBY is planning a candidates debate with questions from KCBY moderator only. Remember KCBY is a messerle friend. Why no other debates League of Women and others. Becaise it will hurt your guy Messerle?
And opinion is all we would get from Parry because he has already admitted this is nothing more than a philosophical change based upon ideology without any hard evidence to merit changing anything now.

Waste of time. They could have a wonderful debate. But, when they are done we still will have no idea about Mr. Messerle and the benefits of the adminstrator as he sees it.
Mr. Parry’s opinion as a non-candidate is meaningless.
In my opinion only, we are watching live, what has gone on in this county for forty years. These same faces, backed by the power of Sause and Knutson, are the very people who have the MOST to LOSE if this county ever moves forward and joins every other coastal community who have flourished, in this economy.
It’s actually insulting to watch this, and not be able to publicly confront these snake oil salesmen in any forum but this one solitary private blog.

History shows us, the only way out of this is to close all loopholes, grants, tax free havens, and starting taxing those making over $250,000 what historically grows our economy. It ain’t rocket science, it’s proven history.
Someone, certainly not obama, has to do it. We’re simply repeating history, part of the game to make voters think they have a choice, we don’t.
