To date, The World has not published a letter from a county commissioner in Michigan scolding the paper over an ill thought June 10 editorial about the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) that insulted and infuriated people across the country. The editorial even came to the attention of Colorado State Representative Jared B. Wright who took the time to write a letter to the editor of The World using Colorado House stationary to offer a bit of history and education. Both letters exceed the paper’s 400 word limit but by way of apologizing for publishing such a lousy piece of writing in the first place, maybe the paper will bend the rules for these well reasoned responses.

NDAA Oregon Letter
27 June 2013
Dear World Newspaper Editor:
On New Year’s Eve 2011, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 (NDAA), which has since been proven by many legal experts and scholars to permit the indefinite detention of American citizens who are accused by their government of plotting against an interest of the government.
Congress placed this hotly controversial provision into Sections 1021 and 1022 of the 2012 NDAA which expanded on Congress’s prior 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). In the process, Americans ultimate freedoms and Constitutional rights were placed at extreme risk. Our freedoms were quietly squandered in an otherwise innocuous annual appropriations bill with a traditional sole purpose of routing funds and supplies to our military service members and branches. Under the language in the 2012 NDAA – and even with the do-nothing, smoke and mirrors “fix” that was passed by Congress in the 2013 NDAA – our government can now legally hold a US citizen indefinitely without access to an attorney under military law and prosecute that citizen by military tribunal without the right to counsel or a speedy trial. These provisions are a blatant violation of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution.
Many states, counties, and cities have pushed back against this governmental overreach, to protect your family and your way of life. In the 2013 Colorado state legislative session, I introduced a bill to strictly prohibit any and all state aid or participation in prosecutions, investigations, and indefinite detentions allowed under the 2012 NDAA bill. We faced opposition from career politicians who have sold the liberty of the people they represent in exchange for a guise of safety they can continue to pull down over the faces of the public.
Those like Senator John McCain and Senator Harry Reid have shown us they are satisfied with cutting us off from our families and our freedom if at some point the government bureaucrats they control, those agencies like the NSA and CIA
have even a “suspicion” you are part of a terrorist plot.
My bill to block the NDAA failed in the Colorado State House by just one vote, but we received an outpouring of support from across the country. So many Americans are angry that the government has passed yet another bill violating our Constitutional rights. Organizations determined to protect you and your family came out in support of our bill. None provided help as much PANDA, the People Against the NDAA. With a long list of successful campaigns against the NDAA, PANDA is one of the strongest supporters of our Constitutional rights.
Many neigh-sayers say this sort of indefinite detention of US citizens couldn’t happen in the United States. But during World War II, the Supreme Court sided with President Roosevelt and his Executive Order 9066 that put thousands of Americans in years long captivity without trial based on their race alone. And when the people took it to the US Supreme Court? The court ruled in favor of the government and against our Constitution in the case, Korematsu v. United States! Its happened before, its been upheld by the US Supreme Court and now it has been inserted into our laws.
Clearly, our Congress won’t support our rights, and the Supreme Court won’t stand up to this egregious violation of our liberty – a poisonous root in our laws that threatens our future as a free Nation. Therefore, the best line of defense
for your constitutional rights – is you, the people from the most local level of government on up! So call your County Commissioners and demand they vote in support of the important resolution against the NDAA.
Sincerely,
Jared B. Wright
Colorado State Representative

A coalition of groups and individuals are offering a town hall meeting July 15 at 6PM at the North Bend Library to discuss what we can do to protect our civil liberties from the NDAA. Details to come
