The wonderful Coos Media volunteers have posted the January 31, 2012 BOC meeting in which Sheriff Craig Zanni refutes claims made in a final report hastily submitted to the board at an earlier meeting.
[Begins 0:54:00] Of the two hour meeting fully one hour is taken up on this topic and citizen comments.
Zanni affirms concerns raised on this blog about the quality of the report and says that the committee failed to achieve its stated goals and he read from a minority report. He apologizes for not taking a stronger role in the committee to help keep it on track. “We totally missed the mark”, said Zanni.
Commissioner Bob Main took the opportunity to restate earlier complaints about the committee’s early release of the draft report and statements made by committee co-chair Al Pettit at public venues. He suggested that Pettit should have been fired, “twice”! Main brought up the astonishingly ill advised claims by Al Pettit that the county was vulnerable to hackers. “Thinking about what was said about IT”, began Main, “…though it is not true that we are vulnerable to attack… if we were, why would you announce to the whole world that we were? That’s totally irresponsible.” [Begins at 1:11:00]
Many citizens took advantage of the occasion to thank the sheriff and share their opinions of the co-chairs’, Pettit and Jon Barton, methods and tactics.
Fred Messerle who is the liaison to the structure advisory committee was very stoic throughout while Cam Parry was missing in action.
Well said Mr. Chasm!
After a recent discussion with an individual whose opinion I greatly respect I will agree that there are scenarios that warrant protecting ones identity. However, short of those very few reasons I believe an “opinion” whether based on personal perception or supported by fact loses validity when the individual expressing it lacks the courage to identify themselves. I too will always use my real name when posting on this or any other site and proudly identify myself when directly conversing with people. I strongly believe (my opinion), and have publicly stated, that much of what Mr. Pettit has claimed to be reality is in fact HIS “opinion” and is driven by his, and others in his circle, attempt to promote his agenda. Comments made by Mr. Pettit here, in the World, and the Register Guard, have shown a clear distain for anyone who disagrees with his “opinions”, and frustration with peoples lack of respect for his oft stated selfless devotion to identifying the perilous state our county is in. I not only disagree with Mr. Pettit and the current board of commissioners dire representation of our county governments financial condition, I am in fact encouraged by what the employees of Coos County have accomplished, I whole heartedly believe that we will not only be able to balance our budget while maintaining current staff and service levels, and that we will improve on both in the future.
I strongly support the findings of the minority report and Sheriff Zanni and Daniela Kellum for their courage to present it.
My name is Randy Sanne, I am a candidate for Coos County Commissioner, position 1. I believe in open, honest, transparent government of, by, and for the people. I have and will continue to aggressively defend that belief.
If I have anything to say I say it under my real name and I will say to people’s face. The entire structure of Coos County is deeply corrupt. From the Port to the SCDC and County Commissioners they operate in the back room for the benifit of a handful of powerful families and corporations that got rich as Weyco logged out the forest and skipped town. They want to go back to the fleecing but the sheep is already shorn. I thank May Geddrey for the courage and skill she delivers to observe and critque this big nasty mess. She is in my mind a real patriot speaking truth to power. Opinion whoever they are is a pathic sniving frightened twerp sniping at someone with guts.
One can hope! 🙂
Opinion does protest too much and I would bet money that a lot will come out in the wash long before the next election – perhaps even in a courtroom or arbitration chamber
Oh please, the threats, the insolvency talk and sour grapes sure sound like Al….in fact, he hasn’t posted under his own name since he was laughed off the blog….”opinion” doth protest too much….
Dear Mr. or Ms. Opinion: Ima new person here. You write like a long time resident who is very involved in county management matters. Please lend credibility to your friend Charlie Pettit’s report. I would appreciate your brief summary of the strong and weak points of the majority and minority committee reports and, of course, why you concur or disagree. Thanks.
Mary, perhaps those ‘paid’ county employees better be careful what they get themselves involved in committee wise, support and then turn and tuck tail. It will all wash out in this next election To The Reminder.. Lets just say Main has his work cut out for him.
You say “its about damn time county employees are speaking up”. What are you referring to? What is the content that was spoken, that rattled some nerves?
Did I miss your answer?
Looking for ideas? Her site has many positive ideas, in many different stories that have been posted here. Why should they be listed for a lazy reader, when the links on the home page will help you begin your search for better ideas. If you cant find any then you should look elsewhere, or tell us how yours are superior.
It will be interesting to see how or if The World covers this minority report after giving the majority opinion so much full coverage. As for “opinion” Zanni said it best. The committee “missed the mark”. One really has to do a bad job to fired from a volunteer position
To: The Reminder .. ‘insulting everyone who reads this”… its what many of you do quite well. So much time is wasted by Mary and many that support her. Yet just once it would be nice to have Mary bring something positive to the table with an actual plan on how to improve things instead of continually blasting what others are doing. This group has a tendency to support the idea that there are not ineffeciencies within Coos County that cost this county money. County employees are talking as well as many others in this community who are wanting to see positive change to avoid becoming insolvent as well as promote growth in our community. Take some action and get some actual ideas on the table for once.
opinion, if she wasn’t making a difference, you wouldn’t be here. You start off by insulting everyone that reads this online news site. You must be VERY close to the chains being yanked. Your attack will just strengthen the move to see changes for this area. You seem to be a big fan of Al, some here are less prone to cheer for him.

Well well well, Mary, you sure do have your panties in a twist… And for that matter so does your buddy Bob Main. How amusing this has been to watch you, your pathetic followers and Bob Main squirm. Al Pettit should be fired? Seriously? Fired from what? Something that Al along with seven others including Zanni volunteered to do. They aren’t paid for this…they don’t have decision making power. Recommendations, provided by county employees that are presented to the Board are just that..recommendations. Its up to the Board to make the decisions/changes. You waste so much time fighting what Mary? What are you contributing? NOTHING. You are an expert at complaining on just about everything. What is it that you are so worried about? Seems to me its about damn time county employees are speaking up and its obviously rattling a few nerves out there. Maybe you should be fired.. for being the county pain in the ass. Maybe you should be asking Bob Main what the heck he has done in the last four years to improve this county. Mary spend your time on something that will make a difference.
Yup, it wouldn’t be the first pink slip Al has ever received
Lest we forget Mr. Robert “Bob” Main, you created the monster. You appointed the other commissioners. You selected the “committees”. Apparently your two collegues considered themselves to be weak and ill prepared to manage the county; and they decided management by committee was better for them. You got the committee reports that you paid for.
Robert “Bob”, you say that Charlie “should have been fired” and “twice”; you won’t get an argument from a majority of the county. Something that the company that you claimed your man Charlie saved did to him in 1994; long before the company was saved by him.
