Structure advisory committee members Al Pettit and Jon Barton do not like an idea floated by the governance advisory committee to hire an interim manager to take over some of the administrative duties of the county commissioners. Members of the governance committee are less convinced that hiring an administrator will heal all the county’s wounds and suggested trying the idea out first. Pettit and Barton both felt an “interim” manager would be constrained by the temporary status from making the changes they feel are necessary to change whatever it is they are trying to change (it hasn’t stopped our interim commissioners at all). “We should memorialize this position with a contract”, said Barton.

Additionally, the co-chairs didn’t think it would be prudent to hire from within and inexplicably few on the committee supported another idea from the governance committee of surveying the commissioners to develop a job description for a manager. Go figure…

Sheriff Craig Zanni, to his credit, advised the committee that when making sweeping changes as are being suggested by the group that without the support of the people, it simply will not work. After receiving some push back from Barton, Zanni repeated the same statement and he is correct.
