A visibly shaken, Bob Main, had to struggle for composure at a press conference this morning with Coos County department heads and the press. Nikki Whitty was also in attendance. Andy Jackson, had been in Riverbend Hospital in Eugene for a relatively minor procedure before returning to the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay. Last night, Jackson, who had a history of heart issues was taken by ambulance by to Riverbend a major cardiac hospital where he passed away.

It was only during the last few months that I had gotten to know Andy. He was a quiet sort of gentle giant but after a couple of long discussions I realized that he was always paying attention, very informed about issues, globally and locally, and while we wouldn’t agree on everything I felt very confidently that he would always make informed and thoughtful decisions. Without a doubt, Andy cared about the county as a whole and would not have been influenced by select or special interests.

The county will accept applications to fill Jackson’s commission seat pending the next general election in 2012. Whitty, who has been battling cancer announced that she would be getting a ride in to work every day to resume her duties.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. For information on funeral services contact Bobbi Brooks in the commissioners office. Main commented that a really large venue will be needed for all his friends to attend.

Peace be upon you, Andy, we will all miss you.
