According to The World, there are better things to do than defend the constitution if you are a Coos County commissioner.
The paper “cheers” John Sweet for refusing to defend the constitution and violating his own oath of office wherein he swore to uphold the US and Oregon constitutions. Reading between the lines, the paper scolds Bob Main and Melissa Cribbins and Sheriff Craig Zanni for taking their oaths seriously and using their office to defend our civil liberties.
The World is lock-step with the Chamber of Consorts and the stuck in the past SCDC crowd. They will never allow the people of Coos County to know the truth,in my humble opinion, and history shows us that. Locals still don’t know the Port is sucking the life out of this county with their millions upon millions thrown down the Port-Hole which should be going to the people of Coos County. Schools close, teachers leave, but the Port gets another ten million dollars of Other People’s Money, you’ll never read that in The World, ever. Nor anything else Jon Barton doesn’t okay. I am amazed they’ve gotten away with it this long, but they’ve got DiFazio in their hip pocket for re-election purposes, the righties are told over and over again how important the Port is. What a crock. A very expensive crock.
Thank you Sheriff Zanni for taking a position in favor of our Constitution.
Perhaps the problem with John Sweet and the World Newspaper is they do not understand how Government is supposed to work under the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Several Founding documents explain the purpose of government as protecting citizens’ liberty and individual rights. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that one purpose of government was to “secure” inalienable rights, including “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The Preamble to the Constitution explains that it was written to “secure the blessings of liberty.” Both the Fifth Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment say that neither the federal government nor states can deprive citizens of “life, liberty or property” without due process. The Tenth Amendment makes explicit the idea that the federal government is limited to ONLY the powers granted in the Constitution.
Our County Commissioners have an obligation and a duty to uphold our Constitution and the Bill of Rights and to protect the unalienable rights of the citizens they serve. Since when would this not be county business?
The World paper remains a joke. Maybe the editorial board would want to claim as its own the quote “what good fortune for governments that people do not think”. Save your time checking editorial board; it’s from Adolf Hitler.
