Bob Main, who waited months after Randy Sanne filed for position one to declare his intentions to run for reelection, is blaming Randy Sanne of stealing environmentally conscious votes from him and is now declaring Sanne’s support will help him defeat late filer Fred Messerle in the fall. Sanne voters may not consider Main, who is wholly responsible for appointing Messerle to the interim position, worthy of a vote, even if it is to defeat Messerle.

Even if Sanne publicly throws his support behind Main but many of Sanne’s supporters may prefer to sit out the election rather than vote for the lesser of two evils. Main betrayed his supporters by appointing Messerle and Cam Parry in the first place and is widely regarded as arrogant, rude, manipulative and self serving. At last night’s soiree at the Sentinel, Main quipped that if Messerle wins he will happily retire and go on lots of fishing trips. This leads to the question of why didn’t he just go fishing in the first place rather than steal votes from Randy Sanne?

Many people voted for Main rather than Sanne out of fear Sanne couldn’t defeat Messerle but Main is a fool to think Sanne voters will automatically step sideways after all the mistakes Main made during his term. Frankly, it isn’t that simple and as we saw from the record low turnout even high dollar ad campaigns couldn’t entice the voters to the polls. Sanne, who gathered almost 3,000 votes on shoe string budget of .40 per vote has a much stronger chance of winning in November, now that the public knows he is viable, than Main does. If Main really wants to see Messerle defeated this fall he should take a long hunting and fishing trip to Eastern Oregon and throw his support behind Sanne.

On a side note, interim commissioners Messerle and Parry were seen having lunch in Bandon Tuesday after the BOC meeting with Bandon city manager, Matt Winkel and North Bend city manager, Terence O’Connor. An email requesting the nature of their discussions has not been answered. Bearing in mind that meeting in quorums without public notice is allowed if they do not discuss county business the commissioners are also supposed to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. This commission has been meeting for breakfast in North Bend off and on for months and so clearly disregard appearances all together. Also, Mrs Messerle took to parking her campaign sign laden vehicle back in the highly visible thirty minute parking slot even after being warned about it previously. Some people may feel they are above the rules.
