A former department head and site manager at the Beaver Hill Disposal Site writes that Coos County commissioners may have been making poor choices for the plant for many years. Skip Sumstine pointed out that a decision long ago not enclose the incinerators in a building has contributed to the maintenance problems the facility is facing today. This is just another example of why this commission should not be making major decisions regarding the site without guidance from the state.

Additionally, Waste Connections has provided tonnage numbers to the county. While I haven’t seen these numbers yet, according to what I have been able to learn, the company still collects the same amount of garbage as its predecessor, Les’ Sanitary, but the numbers indicate a mass migration from the unincorporated areas of the county where numbers have dropped to the incorporated areas like North Bend where numbers have risen. The company argues that it may ship trash from within the incorporated areas to outside landfills. Census numbers do not support a large shift in population within the county.

Once again, it is important to obtain a third opinion or cost estimate from a company like Koontz or others to repair the existing site before the commission awards a contract to dismantle it on or about April 18.

Please contact the commission and ask them to allow another estimate and to invite the state down for an inspection before this valuable public asset is demolished and the county is forever condemned to shipping trash to other landfills.
