Massey Energy is certainly an extreme example of the lack of regard the mining industry has for its employees but safety failures are rampant throughout the industry. As Jeff Goodell, author of Big Coal points out it is cheaper to pay the fines than ensure employees go home safely. Deservedly, their stock is suffering for that decision. Why are organizations like SCDC and FONSI promoting such an industry in Coos County? Is this what Coos County should be known for? Dirty industry that other areas will not accept? The nation’s dumping ground?
