So I want to take the opportunity to thank Sgt Smith of Coquille PD for handling a matter of concern quickly and professionally. Prudence requires I not discuss details but Chief Dannels, who is out of town, told me to talk with Sgt Smith who took the matter quite seriously and acted quickly. Sgt Smith stopped by the house after doing some investigation less than an hour after I spoke with him yesterday, to let me know what was going on and I am very pleased.

Further along that vein I want to mention that the matter of Randy Ulmer and his fall from grace was addressed last night at the council meeting. City Manager O’Connor read from a statement by Chief Dannels regarding Ulmer and then reported that the City was implementing changes in policy and procedures to prevent such temptation in the future.

There is no question that finally having a professional running the police department is raising the standards throughout City Hall and for that we should all be grateful. Imagine how it might be with a fresh, professional and forward thinking city manager at the helm… it could be a breath of fresh air.
