Police misconduct is a widespread problem and has been the subject of television programs, movies, novels and countless articles. Of the many problems caused by police malfeasance, one in particular is that young cops, who may join the police force for idealistic reasons are often seduced by or acquiesce to the ‘dark side’ or give up on law enforcement altogether rather than compromise their own standards.
Nevertheless, it is important to point out that the police force is only part of law enforcement. Selective prosecution by local police can only succeed with the aid of the district attorney and complicit judges. As concerned parents and citizens we will ultimately have to address these upper level problems as well.
