A local right-wing radio talk show host dares to imply that successfully bullying the Coos Bay City Council into agreeing not to fly the Gay Pride flag during Pride Month is a “patriotic” act.

Rob Taylor hosts a three-hour once per week program on AM radio where he regurgitates nationalist/fascist dog whistles about critical race theory being taught at K-12 level, (not true) and characterizes drag queens as groomers, (not true). Recently he assured his audience mythical “furries” are running loose in North Bend schools, (not true), they hiss and scratch at fellow students and schools enable this behavior by putting kitty litter in the restrooms, (not true) and even goes so far as to assert they are sexually deviant, (again not true).
Taylor and his self-styled “liberty minded” comrades took issue with the city’s decision to celebrate Gay Pride month along with its LGBTQIA+ citizens by flying the flag on the boardwalk for the month of June. Taylor threatened to sue, and the city council regrettably backed down leaving the gay community to conclude Coos Bay is neither inclusive nor accepting.
Pleased with his accomplishment, Taylor bragged on social media, “No Pride Flag on CB boardwalk thanks to some patriotic activists.”
Obviously, there is nothing “patriotic” about the bigotry Taylor and his friends like Diane Rich and Matt Wilbanks have manifested toward LGBTQIA+ community members. These people often refer to themselves or even greet each other as “patriot” which is ironic considering they have ties to convicted traitors and some of them, Commissioner Rod Taylor for example, participated in the January 6th insurrection.
It comes as no surprize Taylor, Rich, Wilbanks and most of the “liberty minded” crowd are bigots that believe certain members of society aren’t entitled to the same rights and privileges as white Christian nationalists. Nonetheless, Pride Month is a federally recognized celebration and acknowledgment of the struggles of the gay community to achieve equity in our society and Taylor’s post outs him, yet again, as the bigot he is.
This is America and businesses can support whomever they want with their advertising dollars, even a radio program that talks about furries and a eight page print publication with barely 1,000 words of content. Consumers have the same choice as to where they spend their money as well. Importantly, if you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or have family or friends who identify with this community of even if you merely support and sympathize with this group it may not be safe for you to shop at businesses that consistently enable hate speech. For this reason, I am including a list of the advertisers where it may be unsafe to shop or where caution may be warranted.

You guys just don’t stop 😅 your boycott list keeps getting longer. It’s not about being inclusive, it’s about protecting our kids from being sexualized. What about the drag queen in Eugene who got arrested for having and MAKING child pornography, under the guise of “teaching” children how to be drag queens?! We can’t just act like that never happened, and it’s not the only case. We don’t want our children exposed to perverts. End of story. I’m planning on supporting all these businesses even more now.
How people like you operate: You outwardly project your bigotry and unacceptance toward gay and trans kids. When those kids you’ve outcast seek support among the gay and trans community, you accuse those communities of grooming. Do you not see how ignorant and illogical you are, Jane?
The fact of the matter is, there ARE groomers among this community. Children are being abused and sexualized, why is that ok? Kids shouldn’t be worried about sex or sexuality. They should be playing and learning and growing. I have no hat toward homosexual individuals, most of them aren’t doing this. It’s the drag shows at schools, exposing kids to something that until recently, was adult entertainment. If anyone here is being illogical, it’s those of you who think this stuff is appropriate for children.

Drag is basically a burlesque show, which is considered “adult entertainment”. Why is adult entertainment being pushed to children? It’s called grooming. Gay or not, sexual adult behavior should not be happening at schools, or around children.

You should consult a dictionary, because you clearly don’t know the definition of the word “sexualize.” To sexualize someone means to make them an object of desire. There is a lot of controversy around little girl beauty pageants for this reason. The shock of seeing Jon Benet Ramsay singing adult, sexy songs and shaking her butt on stage at the age of four was considerable. Most of us didn’t know little girls were dressed and made up as sex objects, wiggling their way across the stage while singing about their lovers. That is what it means to sexualize a child–it means, again, to make them an object of desire. The child pageant circuit was partly blamed for making Jon Benet into a sex object who ended up murdered in what was a brutal, sexual crime. It does NOT mean allowing them to see a man dressed as a woman, or seeing a naked body (something we all possess). The sexualization happens in the mind of the beholder, who makes the child or man or woman or animal or foot or banana or whatever else into an object of desire.
If that was all it takes, a couple thousand years’ worth of children would have been hopelessly “sexualized” simply by going to the theatre, where all the female parts were played by men (from Antiquity through the end of the 17th century), or simply leaving the house. It’s only been a few hundred years since men around the globe wore trousers. Greek and Roman men wore tunics (short dresses), or robes. I doubt anyone would have called Alexander the Great a sissy, but he wore a short dress all of his busy life. So do priests and the pope. In many areas, such as rural Vietnam, men and women dress exactly alike. Drag queens are mostly distinctly NON-SEXUAL, coming as they do from the vaudeville tradition of men clowning around in women’s dress. This continued well into the TV age, with Milton Berle, Flip Wilson, and of course, Monty Python all portraying caricatures of women on a regular basis. No one was considered more wholesome than Milton Berle, for goodness’ sake! And every summer powerful Republicans meet up at the Bohemian Grove in California, where they perform high camp plays, with the men in drag (no women are allowed at the Grove). I know one of the writers/directors of some of these plays, and he told me George Bush Sr looked especially fetching in a moonlight satin evening gown.
This sudden fever about drag queens is bizarre, and is really about something else entirely. You guys are busily creating and fighting fake culture wars because you are the party of Trump–a womanizing, gluttonous, profane, law-breaking, lying, utterly disgusting man who no one would willingly leave alone with their children or women. You have no actual issues anymore, just Trumpism, White Nationalism, a totally fake and blasphemous version of Christianity, and rage. Keep screaming about drag queens, while Democrats keep beating your moronic candidates. That’s fine with me.

It should be said that Coos Bay City Council is a bunch of cowards. There are pride flags currently flying at state capitols throughout the country.
Especially when you consider it is a federally recognized celebration. There is no excuse for the city to fold based upon a threat from the likes of RT and his gang
