Never have I heard anyone suggest that Mary Schamehorn, editor of the Myrtle Point Herald, ever let good judgment, professionalism and propriety get in the way of bolstering her own ego. Take for example when she went out of her way to “out” the District Water Master after they collided in a gun control debate. Today, Schamehorn achieved a new low in bad form when she emailed a reader explaining why the paper had been sold.
The Herald was experiencing extremely difficult financial problems. It was purchased by Matt and Kim Hall, who own the Port Orford paper and recently purchased the Gold Beach paper. I am the one who called Matt to see if he was in the market for another paper since I knew Sherry was having such a financial struggle and I didn’t know how much longer we could hang on. It means the Herald will live to see another day . . . Mary
Mary sees herself as the savior of the Myrtle Point Herald… sigh
Interesting! Schamehorn the employee claims the paper is near financial collapse; Hall the new owner says the paper is healthy and viable. Maybe the new owner who also says that there will be no change in employees should reconsider before loose lips Schamehorn sinks the ship.
We will just have to wait and see whether the paper magically improves its advertising base or cuts back on hours for employees to gauge the truth of either statement. The World piece did imply there was a problem when it quoted Schamehorn as saying it is important to keep small papers going… it needed cash or new owners to keep it going????
Mary S. is another perfect example of the Peter Principle.
