Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have sponsored joint resolutions in support of a constitutional amendment to effectively overturn Citizens United and “outright banning the ability of corporations to use their profits to influence our elections.”
“The Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining the Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy (OCCUPIED) Amendment is a constitutional amendment introduced by Congressman Ted Deutch of Florida’s 19th district. See a section-by-section explanation of the OCCUPIED Amendment below.”
Theodore Roosevelt wrote in 1910 that ..”one of the chief factors in progress is the destruction of special privilege. The essence of any struggle for healthy liberty has always been, and must always be, to take from some one man or class of men the right to enjoy power, or wealth, or position, or immunity, which has not been earned by service to his or their fellows…” Roosevelt went on to say that every person will have a fair chance to reach their highest potential “unassisted by special privilege” and “unhampered by the special privilege of others”. The OCCUPIED amendment seeks to restore the balance of fairness undone by Citizens United and to which Justice Stevens declared in his dissenting statement that corporations are not “actually members” of society and cannot run for office or vote.
Consider who accepted corporate donations when you vote this November.
Sigh, another Koch Sucker.
Unions spend hundreds of millions trying to sway elections – they’re as guilty of election rigging as any corporation. The Wisconsin recall is a perfect example.
Three of the four largest PAC’s in the US are labor unions who spend millions of their members dollars supporting “Democrat” candidates. Should the SUB (Stop Union Bullies) amendment also be introduced to outlaw unions donations?
Unions represent the wage earners or are supposed to and therefore average voters. Corporations cannot vote but wield disproportionate influence on local politics for shareholders who don’t necessarily live in the district
A constitutional amendment, is not needed. Congress can act to do what is necessary, and then enforce it, just like emigration.
