Wow! Talk about opportunists. Fred Messerle shadowed by Cam Parry just staged the most revolting dog and pony show I have seen in a long time. With Main attending by phone, Messerle has used the replacement of $13,000 worth of ducting that is easily isolated from the rest of the system as an excuse to shut down all three burners at the Beaver Hill facility, declare an emergency to contract with a company like Waste Connections to haul our trash to a landfill. Main, seconded a motion to expedite the bidding process but may not have understood that motion also included shutting down the entire plant for repairs.
To add to the drama, Messerle had management give an estimate for making the Beaver Hill facility shiny and beautiful again. The figure, $1.5 million was accompanied by the appropriate frowns and head shaking you would expect from confidence men trying to work a mark, in this case the taxpayer. Under the previous manager, Steve Allen, a lot of maintenance on the plant was deferred and money placed into a contingency fund that now totals more than $2.5 million. There is no requirement from DEQ that those funds be held to cover possible future closure costs. In other words, there is plenty of money to make overdue repairs to this valuable public investment without sending our trash to a remote landfill to benefit one company, Waste Connections, and put independent haulers out of work.
This commission is willing to throw away a multimillion dollar taxpayer investment to benefit one company and is going to use deferred maintenance as the excuse. There is more but I am way too angry right now but if anyone wondered who Messerle’s daddy is, now you know. The picture above depicts the type of management you can expect from Messerle, et al.
Can some one tell me why the BOC is NOT enforcing their collections with Waste Connections?
Perhaps their guy can come on here and defend his company not paying their bills. I pay mine.
Also? I’ve thought for years, this company sucks up public funds to provide recycling, but they sure as hell do not recycle properly, what kind of recycle program does’t take milk cartons?
My guess is they get the subsidies, but provide next to none actual recycling.
Can anyone out there let us know whether we are right? That those silly plastic recycle baskets go right into the land fill and Waste Connections pockets the subsidy for running a “recycle” program?
I have heard that most of our curb side recycling ends up going right into the trash by Waste Connections. It would be nice to find out the truth about what REALLY goes on behind the scenes.
Properly utilizing our solid waste stream could be a potential money maker for the county. Here is an example of that –
Miramar Landfill – A public asset that benefits all San Diegans

Unfortunately our Commissioners are not listening to this kind of wisdom. They are listening to SCDC folks and people who are part of the reason the county is in the shape it’s in. The Blind leading the Blind….
It is time for Citizens to hire Commissioners who don’t have their heads stuck in the sand.
There is so much opportunity if we only were paying attention:

Trash-Based Biofuels: From Landfill to Full Tank of Gas
Lawn clippings and unrecycled paper could help break the world’s oil addiction
By David Biello | February 12, 2008
“….BlueFire estimates 40 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol could be produced from plant waste destined for the landfill, providing as much as one third of all U.S. transportation fuel needs. And, if other forms of waste, such as the stalks of corn plants (corn stover) or the remnants of timber harvest are included, Klann says, “we have enough feedstock in the U.S. to offset 70 percent of the oil import.”….”

Energy from Urban Waste
“…Every large Texas city should carefully evaluate its landfill gas potential. Why? Because what used to be known as”the dump” has become one of America’s most cost-effective and reliable energy resources.
The number of Texas landfill gas-to-energy projects have been steadily increasing in recent years as landfills are being tapped for heat, electricity and renewable motor fuel….”

Using Waste, Swedish City Cuts Its Fossil Fuel Use
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL
Published: December 10, 2010
“…Once the city fathers got into the habit of harnessing power locally, they saw fuel everywhere: Kristianstad also burns gas emanating from an old landfill and sewage ponds, as well as wood waste from flooring factories and tree prunings….”
“…“It’s a much more secure energy supply — we didn’t want to buy oil anymore from the Middle East or Norway,” said Lennart Erfors, the engineer who is overseeing the transition in this colorful city of 18th-century row houses. “And it has created jobs in the energy sector.”…”

Envion Oil Generator turns plastic waste into oil
By Paul Ridden
17:12 September 21, 2009
“…The ground-breaking Envion Oil Generator (EOG) gave its first public performance at the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Derwood, Maryland recently. The EOG can be fed almost any petroleum-based waste plastic and will convert it into synthetic light to medium oil for less than USD$10 per barrel. As with crude oil, the synthetic oil can then be processed into commercial fuels or even back into plastic….”

What is really disgusting is that the commission is not enforcing the agreement with Waste Connections to deliver the same tonnage to the Beaver Hill site as Les’ Sanitation. Waste Connections effectively owes the county money and this commission is helping them escape that debt by discarding a public investment. All three of them should be publicly flogged.
If Waste Connections were proud of their company, wouldn’t they have had a Gala Opening when they silently bought out Les and North Bend Sanitation? Why not advertise they have taken over garbage in Coos County? What are they ashamed of that they wouldn’t brand their cans?
I feel like a real shlep for not paying attention to this.
Waste Connections has already moved here. There honcho sits on SCDC membership board. They just bought out Les’ Sanitation, right?
I heard not one word of this going on with Les’ Sanitation until I drove into the parking lot of the North Bend Sanitation office to pay my bill, did Waste Connections buy that too?
So it appears Waste Connections is already here and just waiting to be handed the infrastructure of this county.
All this going on, and not one of us even noticed??
Where was the public notice of these moves by Waste Connections?
Waste Connections has a long history of taking over municalipal lahdfills. Fred closed out the meetiing saying we would have to look at a reduction in force during the “repairs”
If its not a state mandated service to the public, then its a vulnerable asset on SCDC’s shopping/chopping list. If this bunch thinks they can’t win re-election, then they will need to push fast and hard for any chance of brokering a deal on what is up for grabs. They have been advertising something like this would happen, ever since they where appointed, and formed their committees. How many deals concerning county funds are Jon, Fred, and Cam brokering at the same time, while they have this county so vulnerable? Who recommended this move? We will never know, unless or until a whistle-blower steps forward and confirms what many have already deducted based on the evidence presented at this news-media.
