One of the reasons then candidate Bob Main was able to defeat incumbent commissioner John Griffith in the 2008 primary election is because Griffith’s poor policy positions regarding the environment attracted the attention of conservation groups in and outside of the county. Outside money and influence poured in to defeat Griffith and since Main claimed to be unenthusiastic about a proposed LNG terminal opponents voted less for Bob Main and more against John Griffith.

According to the Coquille Sentinel Main plans to run for reelection and his stance on increased logging, his definition of the concept of “forest health” as “fuzzy” and his efforts to tether the county economy to resource extraction subject to global market conditions will earn him the same response from environmentalists as Griffith received.
