A quick update. Cam Parry, representing the County Commission traveled to DC last week with representatives of the Coquille Tribe to test the Congressional reaction over a proposal to turn over management of federal timber lands to the tribe. According to Parry they contingent never received a clear “NO” to the proposal but obviously a lot of work must be done to prepare any passable legislation.
Under tribal management the county will receive 50% of the proceeds of any logging. When asked if the other taxing districts, schools, rural fire districts, etc, will benefit from this proposal the commissioners said this detail is yet to be worked out.
Much more on this in a subsequent post.
Yea, while the hound dog barks at the Spanish speaking cat.
It is a little like watching two foxes discuss how to guard the hen house.
County pays for Parry DC trip headline is no more surprising than State pays for Port trip, or any other travel expenses incurred by Government employees. Has been and always will be SOP.
But, it appears we are paying for Cam to lobby the feds, to privatize more land for harvest. Is that his real job, Lobbyist for Corporate interest in public resources?
What did the old timers call that, something like PUTTING THE FOX IN CHARGE OF THE HEN HOUSE.
Shouldn’t the state of Oregon conduct those type of treaties on the public’s behalf, not the state of Coos?
Couldn’t phone calls work? Perhaps money for “campaigns” can be transferred or promised more professionally in person..
