SCDC was deemed a ‘non essential’ service today and the BOC did not reach a decision to pay $5,000 in annual dues. Several people spoke for and against the South Coast Development Council and with Commissioner Whitty out sick there was little chance of budget conscious Bob Main voting for it.
Main explained they would be canceling other non essential memberships like the Association of Oregon Counties, for example, and told Sandy Messerle, director of SCDC he appreciated her hard work.
My primary issue with SCDC is they organization uses public money to lobby for private corporations often to the detriment of some of the citizens that help fund them. Other speakers pointed out this has become a very divisive practice, pitting neighbor against neighbor.
I agree.
