One report lists eight civilians dead at this village near the border of Iraq. What the hell are we doing? Is this Bush’s last hurrah or is it meant to add up to some ‘October surprise’?

U.S. military helicopters attacked an area along Syria’s border with Iraq on Sunday, causing casualties, Syrian state TV and witnesses said.

The television report quoted unnamed Syrian officials and said the area is near the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal. It gave no other details.

Local residents told The Associated Press by telephone that two helicopters carrying U.S. soldiers raided a farm in the village of Hwijeh, 10 miles inside Syria’s border, killing seven people and wounding five. One of the witnesses said five of the dead were from a single family.

What hubris to think we can just invade another country? Isn’t this an act of war? How will Syria respond this time?

UPDATE: Richard Engel reports that Syrian officials are lodging formal protest with US and Iraqi charges d’affaire.

UPDATE 2: US sanctions top Syrian businessman.

The sanctions affect Rami Makhlouf, a first cousin of President Bashar Assad and one of Syria’s most powerful men.

No immediate response from officials in Damascus was reported.

The US Treasury Department order freezes any assets that Mr Makhlouf holds in US financial institutions and prohibits US citizens and firms from engaging in any business contacts with him.

What self respecting foreign business person would still have assets in US financial institutions? Everyone I know, including Dick Cheney, is heavily vested in Euros and Yen.
