Gold Star Father Kicked Defending Dead Son’s Memorial …by Mélida Arredondo
Mélida Arredondo is the stepmother of Lance Cpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, killed in Iraq, Aug. 25, 2004.
Carlos Arredondo, 47 year old father of two sons, arrived in the nation’s capitol on Monday, 09/10/07 to share a memorial he has made to honor for his eldest son, Alex. Carlos has visited thirty of the United States with the traveling memorial to his son Alexander. Lcpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, USMC was killed on 08/25/04. He was 20 years and 20 days old. The memorial consists of a casket, poster- size photographs of Alex when he graduated from boot camp, before his second tour in Iraq, lying in state at his wake, and a photo of Alex with his younger brother Brian.
Saturday, September 15, 2007 consisted of first a rally, a march towards the capitol and then a die-in. Carlos pulled the memorial along the march route approaching the rotunda near the capitol building. Several of the marchers requested for him to speak about the memorial where a crowd gathered around him. After finishing, several people walked with Carlos as he pulled the memorial. Several pictures of Alex dressed in his blues were attached to the display.
As Carlos passed counter protesters, one man ripped a picture of Alex from the memorial. Carlos leaped on the man to retrieve the picture. It was at that point that approximately five others all began to attack Carlos by kicking him in the head, legs, stomach and back.
The Capitol police bicycle patrol then appeared to break up the fight. Several officers including a female officer were engaged in breaking up the fight and were able to stop any further injuries from occurring. Hannah Jones who was walking with Carlos was also assaulted.
A bystander named Ramesh witnessed the whole encounter and also retrieved the picture of Alex for Carlos. He was quite distressed at how he watched the men yelling epithets follow Carlos as he pulled the memorial, and eventually take Alex’s photograph. Soon, an ambulance showed up as well as many concerned activists. The paramedics provided first aid to Carlos but he did not seek further medical attention. Carlos sustained bloody cuts on his shins. He also reported bruises all over his torso and head where he was kicked.

Reponding to the challeng laid dowm, I would point out the April Gilespie was the mouthpice Bush I used to convey to Saddam the “Green Light” to invade Kuwait, by saying the United States had no interests there – i.e. would not defend Kuwait. Saddam then stepped into the trap laid for him, and we were “off to the races”.
Had Bush I instead directed Gilespie to say we would defend Kuwait, Saddam would have not attacked, we would not have counterattacked. There would have been no war in Iraq. Not in the the 90s, not in the Oh-oh decade.

Okay, I’ve been thinking about something. I admit I’ve been very angry at the lack of movement to end this occupation and restore some sanity to our foreign policy. I have been slinging my own shit for the last few days, I, quite frankly enjoy it when I’m frustrated on a national level. But in the long run, it’s really pointless, other than temporary. No name calling, no ridiculing each others’ spelling or grammer(I am most guilty of that, I admit), just letting each other see what we KNOW about a particular issue. Let’s not make it a touchy feely thing, let’s use questions re: policy, or history of the occupation, or the characters in Washington, or the military, whatever. Something we each have to spend a little time thinking about, or reading about. It might really be interesting, and maybe even more fun than calling names(yes, that’s me).

I’ll go first so you don’t think my previous blog was a trap, because I really do care.
The only person I found that was willing to show since on this blog was Frosted Flake, thank you for your comments. I may not aggree with everything you said but I did see wisdom in your statements and not just ranting like others on this site.
What drives me in the support of our troops and their mission:
I feel that we are at war every day weather we want to see it or not, it is the fact of life. Someone always wants to take what isn’t theirs, inflict their ideas on you. That is terrorism, it has been around ever since time and with that peace and faith go out the window. I voluntered to join the military at the end of Vietnam 71-74, not that I knew it was going to end. My thoughts were that in some small way I could help to defeat communists (evil) control over people and the threat to everyones freedom and right to live in peace. Bottom line is that in a nut shell, freedom for everyone, and the right to live in peace. I didn’t have to think about anything else, just plan and simple. The price of oil, who has the control of oil, the price of food, and other things that cloud the issue that everyones freedom and right to live in peace is in jeopardy. Like I have said before, if we are the super power of the world then we should be standing up to any and all terrorist that inflict pain and suffering on whom ever. No questions asked, evil should be taken out and that is the only way that peace can be attained bottom line. Can it be attained, I don’t know but I feel that we should try even if it is in vain.
Think long and hard about the people that you are condeming to be under such terror every day. We are fortunate to live in a country that does care about the greater good, not just the people at the top. Be aware the hoard is coming to your neighborhood, if you sit back and do nothing. It is your choice, my choice is to stand in support the troops and their mission.
I know that I have given you alot of ammunition for negative comments, I would hope you don’t share them. Like I stated this is how I feel, it isn’t up for debate by anyone. Just as what ever you have to say isn’t up for debate from me as long as it is how you feel and not some canned answers that I can watch the news, or see on the internet.

Ok, I am a bottom line kind of guy that would ask all of you to really lay it down on the line why you show such contempt. Please don’t tell me facts or figures that you find on your news, internet, or your propaganda sites. I just want your own take on this, but let it be the dark secret that drives you. I know that it can’t be the price of oil, the price of food, your social security check, or your disability check, it has more to do with you inside. I want to know what drives you. let it all out, because holding such contempt isn’t good for you or the people around you.
This is true! Framing is a big part also – the strict, authoritarian father figure who tells you how to think and act vs the nurturing parent who encourages open thought.
One tells you you are only good, or worthy or patriotic if you behave in a method defined by the father.
The other encourages compassion and openness and acknowledges that questioning authority does not mean lack of respect
John Dean, a republican by the way, wrote “Conservatives Without Conscience” . In this excellent book he explains how conservatives require a father or authoritarian figure to tell them how to think and act. G Gordon Liddy is a prime example of somoeone willing to commit crimes because ‘his president’ told him to.
This syndrome afflicts most conservatives and relieves their conscience allowing them to say they don’t believe in war and then spend all their time justifying one. If dad tells them it is okay, or if Bush tells them it is okay… they accept it.
Magix, ever wonder why the right wing-nuts can’t come up with anything more interesting than Hillary Clinton? Always, always, throw in a couple of Hail Hillaries, and off they go. They are incapable of independent thought, aren’t they? At what age do you think they stop being curious, and just start repeating what their leaders tell them to think and say? I listen and watch him, and think of all the good young men who served this country in VN in the 60’s and 70’s, who lost their lives and limbs, and have emotional scars they try so hard to live with. They did the right thing, they served their country.
