My email inbox is flooded with reports that Clark Walworth, executive editor of The World newspaper is gone. A quick look at the contact list for today’s paper does not include Walworth where the Thursday paper still included him as editor. The paper is also advertising for a replacement. An employee who wishes to remain anonymous confirms that Walworth as been let go and no longer works for Lee Enterprises, parent company of The World.
Before we celebrate, let’s wait and see what changes, if any, the paper implements.
Re Walworth’s Job Hunting Tips: Grumpy indeed, but very sound advice. Most reporter and editor applicants I deal with — over the last 30 years — come in totally unprepared or submit materials that don’t help them or me.
I would like to see The World become a better paper. Here’s best wishes for finding a good editor who is allowed and supported in his leadership.
Get to know Walworth. Google “Clark Walworth” + “Job tips from a grumpy old editor”. It’s a May 1998 article. He modified it in 2011. Guess he recognized what a jerk he appeared to be in the article.
And another thought, people can’t say that they did not know Walworth before he arrived. The Internet is alive with Walworth my poop don’t stink articles. My favorite was an open letter from Walworth to aspiring journalists. In so many words he said, hey, don’t bother me when you are seeking a job. I’ve already formed an opinion about anything you could say. I’m still waiting for him to fill his promise to get out into all neighborhoods to meet the people. Anybody seen his body outside of his favorite places, Chamber and SCDC meetings?
You deserve some credit for this development M. Thanks
I would like to be able to agree with you and take some credit but my efforts to push the paper away from mediocrity and towards excellence never seemed to have any impact. However, I can now firmly attest that MGx has lasted longer in Coos County than Clark Walworth.
Thank GOD! Take your video singing praise to the LNG gods with you. I can stop lighting candles. It would not hurt to lose more of those 15 “professional journalists” who Lee claims to employ at the World paper. Not! Hopefully the new person will have more than no experience as a reporter or editor like the present publisher; or more than one year experience like the city editor who writes about chocolate and skateboards. Hopefully the person will be with fact and spell checker; and, hopefully they will give us the full story unlike the editor lady who writes about 90,000 truck loads of sand. Maybe we can get another editor who believes that their neighbors are village idiots.
I have grown found of Clark Waddworth over the years. I can honestly say I have enjoyed yanking his chain while he chased my skittle shitting unicorn! The soft spot right between my figs is going to miss old Waddworth…
Since he dragged the paper to the pro LNG camp and personally participated in a lot of the cheer-leading exercises, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go to work for the port, they owe him big for all he’s done to shield them from scandal. SCDC and the chamber should thank him as well for protecting them with Lee enterprises ink.
Maybe this is karma for having allowed the paper’s editorial space to be used to shill for focus groups and for calling its readers names and labeling public participation as the “haunting” of public meetings
Ding! Dong!
