Speaking at the National Conference for Media Reform in Denver, journalist Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! explained how the mainstream media looks at the world through a corporate lens.

This is no longer a mainstream media, it’s an extreme media beating the drums for war. I really do think that those who are concerned about war, that those who are deeply concerned about the growing inequality in this country, those who are concerned about climate change, about the fate of the planet, are not a fringe minority, not even a silent majority, but a silenced majority, silenced by the corporate media, which is why we have to take it back.

The corporate media is afraid to challenge the status quo, too cowardly to fight for the same men and women who risk their lives defending the public’s right to know, by digging for and telling the truth.

“I see the media as a huge kitchen table that stretches across the globe”, said Goodman, explaining that we all need to debate war and peace and life and death in the issues of the day before we decide to risk the lives of our armed forces. “Anything less than that is a disservice to the men and women of this country who cannot have these debates… but rely on us to have these discussions that lead to the decisions of whether they live or die”.
