The fact that commissioner position one candidate Fred Messerle has been accepting campaign contributions from for profit special interest groups including ORC has been raising eyebrows all over the county. So it is with more than a bit of irony that one of Messerle’s staunchest supporters, Al Pettit is driving around with Messerle For Sale signs.
Not that everyone isn’t already convinced Messerle is available for a price, but really, wait until after the election to advertise the fact. Or, as usual, is Pettit just oblivious to public opinion… is Al really this dense?
The Port of Long Beach is reviewing an application by a terminal operator to conduct the first full-blown test of a dockside system that could treat air emissions from ships at berth, reducing a major source of pollutants by more than 95 percent.
Metropolitan Stevedoring Co., (Metro Ports) which operates the Pier G bulk cargo terminal in Long Beach, has partnered with Advanced Cleanup Technologies Inc. to develop a pilot project to test ACTI’s dockside emissions treatment system at one berth. They are seeking Port development permits to begin construction as early as this fall. The Port is currently preparing an environmental analysis of the project and the South Coast Air Quality Management District is evaluating the air quality benefits.
The system consists of a “bonnet” that fits over the exhaust stacks of ships at berth. Through a network of ducts, emissions captured by the “bonnet” flow to a dockside treatment unit like those found at industrial plants. The treatment unit includes a multi-stage emission cleaning system, with a “scrubber” and selective catalytic reduction. ACTI of Rancho Dominguez estimates the system would reduce harmful air pollutants such as particulate matter and sulfur dioxide by 99 percent, and smog-forming nitrogen oxide by 95 percent.

Sounds pretty darn progressive to me.
Pimp, is it? Don’t worry, Kay, I’m not insulted.
Commercial? No. Just factual evidence. Google Metro Ports for yourself.
http://www.metsteco.com/go-green/
Tell me what I’ve said that is not true.
Yes, I do believe the Port of Coos Bay is an important part of our County’s diversified economic future. It is not a magic bullet. It is not the end-all, be-all. But it is an important part. We must be dedicated to developing it in a way that protects the health of our environment and empowers people through living wage jobs. That is what I am pledged to do.
We can discuss the potential of a coal terminal in Coos Bay if you like (you haven’t yet). Or you can insult me some more, as is your wont in my experience when you lack a credible argument.
“Additionally, Metro Ports will be footing the bill for the repairs and updates to the Coos Bay Rail Link. It’s a win-win for all of us.” Hum, doing commercials for exceptionally clean coal companies. My Gawd Mark, what next? You’ll be telling folks that The Port of Coos Bay is the key to our future !!!!
What? No ! Really?
Scratch that, evidently you do indeed believe The Port of Coos Bay is critical to the success of Coos County.
Pimps don’t care if their ‘income generators’ are clean or not, just that they bring in the bucks.
Calling BS on this as well as any other “progressive” ideas concerning coal.
Who’s Side Are You On Boys, Who’s Side Are You On? Remember Mark? Perhaps you sang that once, you’ve forgotten.
Mark, you and I do NOT go way back. Every word I have ever used in responding to you are your words only. Don’t be mad at me because your cockamamie ideas don’t fly around real progressive thinkers. Not my fault.
One difference would be that PG&E is reacting to Kinder Morgan, the company behind the coal project on the Columbia. Kinder Morgan has a terrible environmental record and a history of law-breaking, pollution, and cover ups. I would be opposed to a Kinder Morgan coal project in Coos Bay too.
The Port of Coos Bay’s partner is Metro Ports. It was chosen primarily for its impeccable environmental record. Metro Ports did not offer the Port of CB the most lucrative deal; there were other companies that would have paid substantially more money. Metro Ports was chosen because it has proven it respects the environment and is a responsible business partner.
The other good thing about Metro Ports is that coal is not the only thing it ships. It is involved in the import and export of many different commodities and intermodal traffic. When coal eventually runs its course, Metro Ports will still be active in Coos Bay shipping commodities back and forth between the US and the Pacific Rim. That is a very, very good thing.
Additionally, Metro Ports will be footing the bill for the repairs and updates to the Coos Bay Rail Link. It’s a win-win for all of us.
MarkM or any other. Please what is the difference between Portland General Electric who is fighting planned trains of coal arriving at the nearby port because coal dust will foul its natural gas generating factory and the Port of Coos Bay, including Jordan Cove Energy, who welcome coal dust near their planned natural gas generating factory? Thanks.
Well, Kay, that is true. But you and I go back a ways. I know you have a thicker skin than most. Is coal really want you want to talk about? I’m happy to do it.
Politics 101, don’t insult the voter.
I thought you might defend your own words in your support of spraying plastic on loaded coal cars to keep coal dust down. And that coal is good for Coos County.
Instead I get insulted, I’ll remember that.
Poor opinion, so much anger, doesn’t even know who to be angry to.
It was me sweetie, with the orange paint. It was just an off-color joke.
Know thy enemy darlin !!!!
Dear Opiniion: What paint? Your pal Al told the city he needed money for windows. I understand that Al is too busy saving Apple Computer to paint. I would gladly donate to his bucket of paint in any color than th present puke Orange. Four years ago, I donated more than your annual income to political and charitable causes, including to several of Messy Messerlies political supporters. Not one penny this year. It’s all documented. Why do you, Al, Messy, Slate, Bennet, find it so difficult to accept the fact that the people refuse to be led by a few self serving people who have spent years accomplishing nothing. And, if you are Bartion as I suspect, Tom D’Amico sends his regards. When is it that you were the CEO of the Cabot Safety Corporation as you told the local fish wrapper? When Al was saving Apple? Never? And, you want the people to believe you?
Rugullible..what an appropriate name for you.. believing everything you hear. Get the facts straight or keep your mouth shut. Highway 101 Hd has not been painted for years and it isn’t even planning to do so. I’m a customer of theirs and know them quite well and know what the improvement will be. There are plenty of businesses in this town who have received matching monies to improve their buildings. If you’re so passionate about where your tax dollars go, then have a little chat with your friends who live off of tax payers dollars when they should get off their butts and contribute. What’s your contribution besides ignorant commentary?
Right. So, how much do you want to contribute to my campaign, Kay?
If Al or anyone else want to discuss Beaver Hill, you know where to find me.
Mark? When faced with the decision of who to believe on the Elliott State Forest? You CHOSE to believe the State Dept. of Lands, instead of the science involved with the positions of Cascade. You had a choice, and you made it. Then, when Sandy Messerlie did indeed lie to you about her “open” process which was “by invitation only” you ignored our voices, and you once again CHOSE to believe Sandy Messerlie. It’s rather hypocritical of you, at this point, when you’ve shown us time and again who you CHOSE to believe, as you often told me, “come to the table, that is where it happens”, well as I told you then, once again Mark, you hitched your cart to the wrong damn horse, you do it all the time. Then you come here, because you deem it helpful to your election, you expect some of us to take you seriously. Why don’t you tell us again about the Plastic Spray on top of coal cars that can be used to keep coal dust down ? You, as you so often tell us, “politics is a game”, continue to play, well many of us don’t think it should be a game, but you go right ahead and sit at that table with the Messerlies and Jon Barton all you want, just please stop calling yourself “progressive”, you don’t know the meaning of the word, you just say it over and over.
Mark M: Every county citizen should be concerned about solid waste. And, we do discuss the matter. It was Al and his pals who told us citizens that we are too stupid to understand matters of importance. We are uneducated in such matters and therefore shoud not be permitted to vote on important matters. This site enables Al and his pals, using several names, to bring joy to our lives. I appreciate their efforts.
Anyone want to discuss Solid Waste, IT or other important issues at the County?
I do. Post a comment on my piece about Beaver Hill. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.
Yo Al, the issues are depressing. Your candidate is a loser and depressing. YOU gave the citizens reason to laugh when you permitted the citizens to believe that you saved Apple Computer. The citizens are not dumb. Discussing the life of Al makes the day more enjoyable for most county citizens. Still waiting for the $500 to be retuned to the taxpayers.
Anyone want to discuss Solid Waste, IT or other important issues at the County? No?
Carry on….
I wouldn’t buy a used or new Harley from him either
Why so much truck for……………………oh, I forgot.
That ‘compensating’ thingey. Makes something small FEEL really big I guess.
Yo Al, what stupidity; to invite calls from people who do not like you? Do you really want anonymous calls from people who will tell you what a jerk they think that you are. They will tie up your phone so you can not be saving the county, nor Apple Computer, nor making arrangements to return the taxpayers money that you did not need. I’ll bet ol’ Al is not a happy camper these days when his pal Clark at the five day Coos Bay garbage can liner should be silent as they are at other times. The paper should have endorsed Messy and gone silent. The recent articles telling voters about the PAC, about ORC buying the election and about Messy, and now front page about Loiselle saying keep you 30 pieces of silver Barton and Pettit, I’m not for sale. The articles are not winning friends or voters; and Messerle had this thing locked up. The articles are a God Send for Sanne who does not have the finances of Main and Messy. Hopefully the PAC will waste all $15,000 and more before year end.
Insulting the working folks who paid to have your motorcyle shop painted Al, that’s brilliant. Poor Al, crowing like a little bandy rooster in the farmyard no one listens to, but they don’t have the heart to tell him. Cock A Doodle Doo.
Hey Al, new paint job? Paid for by these folks you just insulted? The ones who paid taxes so you could suck up thousands of THEIR dollars?
You guys are really something, what is so precious about you that you think WE owe your private business our tax dollars? I’ve had small business’s, never thought for one moment ANY one else owed me their money. I’d be embarrassed as hell. Al seems to be quite pleased with himself, and smug as hell, took money from the working stiffs who DO pay taxes, not accountants.
Beware readers! Would you buy a used car from this man?
…and thanks for advertising my truck. Interested parties can call 541-266-7051.
In the Coos County election cycle, for 2012, for County Commissioner, the elephant is still in the room. We have a representative form of government. Some, don’t know, some want to forget, others want to change it, our Representative Republic.
One of Messerle’s radio ads, begins with these words. “We’re finding”.
So how shall Coos County move forward, represented by the new formed collective, supporting Fred Messerle. He, relieves himself of responsibly as being in the role of Commissioner, by running to change the system of governance. His current radio add says. “Were finding.” There is no “I” in that statement, its the collective which will run the County under their new form of government, and it will not be a Representative Republic form of governance.
“Our Coos County model is long outdated and needs to be brought into the 21st Century.” Right out of the Voters’ Pamphlet.
His paper ads:
His “vision and a plan to help”: “Working cooperatively with the County staff and other commissioners”: “Work with colleagues and staff”: ”Work with other County, State and Federal officials and agencies to form strategic partnerships”. His ad shows no interest in listing or working with the people he represents, unless they are colleagues.
Be cautious, you may get what you vote for.
Is our Constitution outdated?
The Coos County Commissioners represent the citizens of the County, as do all elected persons. And the sheriff is, currently, the Chief Law enforcement officer.
So who, or what interest would benefit from changing our current representative republic form of government?
History shows that separating the people from representation, from their government has placed us in our current economic situation.
Government must be slow, and cumbersome. When the representation is removed and includes the special few who are the communicators representing the rest, it is no longer a Representative Republic.
Love it! Vote for Messerle!! Great to see your support for him here!! And great advertising for AlS truck for sale! Great move and your time was well spent today!
Got to love how Al uses Lane County as an example of a county on the brink of disaster and rampant, unchecked crime to support his argument for an administrator. Lane, of course, has five commissioners and an administrator, just like the governance committee is recommending and it is in worse shape than Coos.
He doesn’t even know what irony means
The real irony is that a county worker texted me about this very thing last week and told me I would, not doubt, end up on your blog with this exact rant. Obviously, I’m not too concerned about what you think. Nonetheless, we all got a good laugh watching your photographer sneaking around the trailer to get this picture. Nothing better to do on a Friday?
P.S. Thanks for running Fred’s campaign ad for free. We appreciate your support.
