Gail Elber at The World has written a very good piece on a Constitution Day celebration hosted by the Coos County Republican Women at Pony Village Mall. Assured by event organizers this was not a campaign event North Bend Middle School sixth graders attended and carried signs representing the original thirteen states.
The event turned out to be a very partisan campaign event, however, and included Art Robinson, running for US House of Representatives, District 4 and Scott Roberts running for Oregon State Representative both stumping for votes. Where were the opposing candidates at this supposedly non partisan celebration of the Constitution?
Event organizer Anita Conn of Coos County Republican Women said that candidates and elected officials of all persuasions had been invited to participate.
However, neither Eldon Rollins, a Democratic candidate for the Oregon House, nor Larry Van Elsberg, Whitty’s opponent in the commissioner’s race, recalled being invited.
Shame on them for using a public school to promote a republican event.
