No matter what happens Commissioner Messerle will find a way to grant the permit, and that will give the green light to Williams and its corporate partners, Fort Chicago Energy Partners and PG&E Corporation. They’ll bury their pipe in the inlet and start bulldozing their way to Malin. The native oysters in Haynes Inlet will be goners, along with the commercial oysters, the fish, the clams, and most of the marine life in the estuaries and in the bay all the way out past the jetties.

Fred Messerle had it all handed to him. When County Commissioner Nikki Whitty died, Commissioner Bob Main appointed Messerle to take Whitty’s place on the Board. That was splendidly efficient, since Messerle didn’t have to trouble himself with getting elected. There was no scrambling to get votes, no speeches, no campaign expenses, no long wait to get the election results. It was all so very pleasantly efficient.

The Structure Committee’s Findings are all smoke, mirrors, generalities and business ideology, but the committee’s purpose has been clear all along, because from the very beginning the Commissioners have dribbled it out here and there, mostly as asides. The purpose of all this hoopla is to radically transform the system of county government.

The county posts its meeting notices on a bulletin board inside the county courthouse. To see the notices, people from as far away as Lakeside, Powers, Charleston or Remote would have to make a daily drive to Coquille, and they’d have to arrive during business hours because you can’t read the bulletin board from outside the courthouse.
