69 mile long debris island blocks shipping lanes and heads for West Coast

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet is closely monitoring islands of debris including one that “stretches 60 nautical miles (69 miles) in length and covers an expanse of more than 2.2 million square feet”, resulting from the massive tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. The debris islands which include whole houses are blocking shipping lanes posing a hazard to big ships and is calculated to hit Hawaii by 2012 and the US West Coast by 2014.
