The article from Left Coast Right Watch highlights concerns regarding Michael Whit Gantenbein, owner of Whit Industries in Coos Bay, Oregon, due to his active involvement in neo-Nazi activities. Gantenbein has been identified as a leader of the Oregon chapter of White Lives Matter, a group designated as a hate organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center. His company has previously secured public contracts from local entities, including the Port of Coos Bay.
In response to federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) requirements, the City of North Bend and the Port of Coos Bay have adopted resolutions to ensure that public entities do not engage contractors who fail to comply with these laws. This move aims to prevent public funds from supporting businesses associated with discriminatory practices.
Currently, Gantenbein is seeking to acquire Giddings Boatworks, a longstanding business located at the Charleston Shipyard. Since the shipyard is owned by the Port of Coos Bay, any new ownership would necessitate a lease agreement between the prospective owner and the Port. Given Gantenbein’s documented affiliations, this potential acquisition raises significant concerns about adherence to DEI policies and the ethical implications of such a business transaction.
The situation underscores the importance of rigorous vetting processes for contractors and business partners, especially when public resources and community values are at stake. It also highlights the challenges that public entities face in balancing legal obligations, ethical considerations, and community standards in their contractual relationships.
We need your help. While Geddry is a volunteer effort there are still costs to providing pro-democracy content to Coos County. Your donation will help cover printing costs, web hosting fees, and of course we need to raise money for our noncommercial community radio station to cover the costs of equipment.
Please make your tax deductible donation here because we can’t do this alone.
