A political advertisement published in the Bandon Western World supporting Fred Messerle reveals a long list of supporters from the business and economic development community ranging from the chamber rats Al Pettit, Jon Barton and Timm Slater to Cal Mukumoto of the tribe’s CEDCO arm, Mary Schamehorn, editor of the Myrtle Point Herald and mayor of Bandon, Joe Benetti, Joseph Drew of ORC, Ron Stuntzner and more. These people may have something to gain by electing Fred Messerle as a commissioner but the rest of us do not.

Real reason for county administrator revealed today

Bice behaved like a wanna-be shock jock at times, referring to “knuckle draggers” and “CAVE people” to which Barton and Pettit cheered but otherwise the show was pretty underwhelming except when the audience was treated to the sound of Jon Barton belching. Pettit appears to be masking his hate for Randy Sanne by continuing to pick on Solid Waste, so there was nothing new there and Barton and Slater sounded like, well, Barton and Slater.

Past boondoggles and familiar names

Reading Wim de Vriend’s book, The JOB Messiahs and seeing all too familiar names like Timm Slater, Jim and John and Nikki Whitty, Arne Roblan and Joanne Verger and Bill Griles associated with past failed taxpayer funded economic development schemes it is easy to see why some people would prefer the book hadn’t been written. While I am still reading the book, (backwards from today), I am astonished that some of these people still expect the public to heed their recommendations. Remember the fable about the boy who cried wolf? Well, in Coos County it should be the tale of the same people who promise jobs and never deliver.
