The same leaders who promoted a disastrous $51 million pipeline promising 2,900 new jobs now want the county to bailout ORC (Oregon Resources) from its own failure to correctly judge the global market. The same leaders who pushed for $50 million airport expansion that now forces most of us to drive to Eugene or Portland to catch a reliable flight, want the county to sign a lease with a company that conventional institutional lenders and investors will not touch.

Since the very recent appointment of Fred Messerle there appears to be a renewed effort to reopen those negotiations being waged at The World. A recent editorial and letters to the editor from the usual mouthpieces at SCDC (South Coast Development Council) and the local Chamber of Commerrce are selling the prospect hard that acquiescing to the company’s demands are in the best interests of the public

Comparing Sanne and McCaffree I would say that Sanne has a much stronger accounting background and foreknowledge of how the county government works, giving him an edge over McCaffree. McCaffree on the other hand has built up a statewide network of public officials and regional experts on many topics from which to draw help from, something Sanne would have to work to develop.

“Urban Renewal” is a great idea that has been hijacked … whereby landowners inside the District get the increment while the rest of you, pardon the expression, get the excrement. Urban renewal should be self-sustaining. There is no reason to freeze taxable assessed values of land, that does not help renewal along. The incentive to rebuild and renew comes from untaxing NEW buildings; the land is already there, and it isn’t going anywhere
