SF Labor Council Condemn Use of U.S. Military to Escort Scab Grain Ship in Longview WA

Coast Guard escort of empty SSA ship from the mouth of the Columbia River to the Port of Longview’s docks: It was reported that this is the first time since the 1970’s that armed forces are being brought out against workers during a labor dispute, and this is a terrible breach of our civil liberties. Dave suggested we contact ACLU for support. In the 1970’s President Nixon brought out the National Guard against the postal workers during a strike. But now, after 9/11 the Coast Guard was reorganized under the Navy as part of Homeland Security, the US Government will use a branch of the military, the Coast Guard, to protect a private corporation against US citizens fighting for their labor rights. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell may be supporting the use of the Coast Guard against the ILWU.

Some quick catching up

A project I have been working on has taken up most of my time these last few months and forced me to focus the blog primarily on local issues we can all do something about but like all of you, I can’t ignore the national and global issues or see the parallels within our own Coos County microcosm.
