Coquille Police have opened a full investigation into a case of severe animal neglect at a Baxter Street duplex. Around 10PM last evening, after repeated complaints from neighbors, police rescued a severely malnourished dog living amidst its own waste for as long as a month. Chief Janice Blue was on the scene and took possession of the female dog and it was given food and water and spent the night at the station. “I had to throw my shoes away,” said Blue.
The health department has been called to examine the apartment. Coquille City Manager Ben Marchant said the apartment may need to be quarantined.
A cat in similar condition was also discovered in the apartment.
The duplex is owned by a Lakeside couple, Danny and Adria Trail and is leased to Bobbie Brooks, assistant to the Coos County Commission. According to neighbors, Brooks’ daughter Katie had been living there until about a month ago. Police said there was no water available to the animals and the dog food was in a cabinet beyond the dog’s reach.
The elder Brooks was last seen entering the apartment on December 9 with a bag of dog food.
The emaciated animal has since been taken by Coos County Animal Control and is said to be receiving veterinary care.
To think we pay her wages she needs to lose her job!
She has not been convicted. The case has been turned over to Douglas County DA for handling to avoid any conflicts of interest
In your reply to “THEMGUYS”, did you mean to state that the tenant, not the landlord, that being Ms. Brooks, is (and should be) facing animal neglect charges. Since the dog can’t complain, us dog lovers would appreciate incarceration.

That woman sits a block from these poor helpless animals? She eats her meals knowing these two
animals are starving? That dog did NOT get into this shape in one week. This woman should be charged with as many fines as possible, and she should never be allowed to have another one. Shame on you Bobbie, there is no excuse for this behavior. Wouldn’t have hurt you one bit to share your own abundant meals. Horrible horrible people. Obviously, not a person to trust. My opinions only, and the facts of this case. Throw the book at these monsters, and yes, I think only a monster would feed their fat face before feeding starving pets. But that’s just me, now we shall see what the City does to their own employee, and we will be watching. Makes me sick. Bobby, I hope you have plenty to eat and drink this holiday season.
The CPD escorted the landlord to the property this afternoon. In addition to animal neglect and abuse charges they are very likely looking at a dealing with a nasty civil suit as well.
