The Sentinel newspaper published some aerial photos of the proposed Jordan Cove LNG export terminal site on the North Spit of Coos Bay under a headline entitled “Yes to Jordan Cove Not to CEP”. The photographs which allude to issues raised by MGx weeks ago that “construction” may already be underway thus nullifying the so-called CEP (Community Enhancement Plan). The article scatters about a few random factoids about the project jumbled in such a way that an essay written by an eighth grader could have made more sense.
In fact, it is hard to determine just exactly what the the paper hoped to accomplish by publishing the photos or the accompanying article and it goes on to make a very risky and unsupportable assumption, specifically that “opposition to the project has waned over the years…” The headline, however, speaks for itself and the paper which serves Coquille and parts of the South County should brace itself for fallout from the landowners along the pipeline. Endorsing a controversial project like Jordan Cove is about as impolitic as when the Sentinel publisher/editor Jean Ivey tried to sabotage the Coquille School District LP-FM radio station. For those who were unable to attend the Wyden town hall meeting held at the Egyptian Theater last Saturday it should be noted that when BS Oregon is not using funds obtained from Veresen,Inc to bus Jordan Cove supporters down from Portland and Vancouver, the anti_LNG crowd outnumbers Jordan Cove supporters by as much as 75%.
LNG Exports Are Illegal
In 1975, President Ford signed the Energy Policy & Conservation Act into law. In order to protect consumers, Section 103(b)(1) of the EPCA (S.622) directed the President of the United States “to promulgate a rule prohibiting the export of crude oil and natural gas produced in the United States, except that the President may…exempt from such prohibition such crude oil or natural gas exports which he [sic] determines to be consistent with the national interest.” While the Department of Commerce promulgated rules banning crude oil exports, the agency never got around to writing rules banning natural gas exports. This oversight not only means that proposed LNG exports are most likely illegal, but that consumers are at risk. That’s because of supply and demand: the more fracked natural gas we export, domestic supplies will get tighter, pushing up gas prices for households and businesses.

These Chamber of Commerce and SCDC folks who are leading the charge to build Jordan Cove are blinded by greed. These “law breakers” have no problem making our community an accessory to our own demise, as long as they get some money going into their pockets and they can’t see it from their house and the pipe doesn’t cross their land.
What has changed recently is that the Democrats all feel safe to endorse this project. That’s not going to bode well for them in the long run. From Kitzhaber down the line to our local Mayors and councilmen, they all feel safe from the local voters, but Nationally they are ready to get spanked at the polls for their corporatist positions. Supporting new big oil/gas projects is becoming less popular by the day, the longer it takes them to get this done the more likely its not going to happen. Just about everyone can see that greed has overtaken logic with the democrats and they are looking more like Dodo birds every day. The light they see coming at the end of their tunnel vision is the train being pushed the opposite direction by the logic of solar and wind power. The old arguments for drilling and exporting gas , over developing renewables for our energy only works on greedy and uninformed people. There seems to be an abundance of that type serving in public office. That’s why they sit on stage patting each other on the back, pretending to be doing the right thing as they sell out the next generation. It is sick.
Disagree with waned; would say that citizens are now educated; they weren’t in 2004. Re Egyptian, what purpose did Shoji and Cribbins serve on stage other than to fill space and look awake while fellow Democrat Wyden spoke. Re Wyden, he was once opposed to LNG. Maybe the $1,000 from CCAP helped change his mind. Re the Sentinel. I have not read it. But, any blind person can see that the content is being driven by Mr. Jennings who as a union organizer. certainly should be a LNG supporter. Perhaps he was article author.
If fact, I heard the entire staff of the Sentinel used crayons and construction paper for the first edition…. The columnist on page seven is wearing adult diapers and not for any medical reason.
Mary you should know that it is a good thing that editors follow their beliefs and not the polls, so it does not matter who outnumber whom at the Wyden meeting. It is also good to have a third or fourth perspective.
More importantly, what does matter is that people attended at all….
Not taking issue with the paper following its beliefs but dispute its claim that opposition has waned. That said, normally when a paper takes a position on a project it offers up an explanation to explain its position. That has not happened here and to be clear I am not discussing your column of the same title.
