Jordan Cove has begun its formal filing process to allow it to export LNG from the North Spit today.
Jordan Cove, with its FERC filing, joins a small handful of companies that have made significant regulatory progress in the move to begin large-scale exports of US natural gas in the form of LNG. More than 20 projects have filed for Department of Energy authorization to export to countries with and without free trade agreements with the US.
Coincidentally, the new energy czar announced today that the DOE will take some time to review the long term impacts of exporting domestic gas before granting any further export licenses.
Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said Tuesday he will delay final decisions on about 20 applications to export liquefied natural gas until he reviews studies by the Energy Department and others on what impact the exports would have on domestic natural gas supplies and prices.
