Coos County Treasurer Mary Barton advised attendees at a work session yesterday this was her last term. Barton has absorbed many duties over the years that extend beyond the state’s constitutional mandates for her office that include acting as a tax collector and budget director. During the work session, Barton encouraged the board to hire a finance director to “prepare and present budget, manage audits, provide assistance to departments on budget and accounting”, oversee payroll and accounts payable and take over tax collections and manage related staff. Barton has been performing these extra functions without added compensation for many years.
The salary range for this person would be $75K to $90K per year.
With the HR director, Mike Lehman, leaving the county may restructure that position by hiring an assistant county counsel with a strong background in labor law or shuffling those duties to other department heads.
I’m curious, Themguys: how long have you lived in this community and how many jobs have you created in that timeframe??? Zero? Not a single one?!
Thanks. We’ll keep that in mind.
Al, you know what happens when you wrap your lips around a hot tail pipe?
Under the ‘leadership’ of al and his SCDC/Chamber of Consorts/, North Bend has ONE frickin’ flight in and one frickin’ flight out to SFO each and every day. Oh, and some puddle jumping BS little puddle jumper to Portland-sometimes.
One flight in, one flight out. What does it cost to maintain hat albatross each and every day, moving escalators, all glass, lights, heat, etc.
One flight a day.
THIS is what Eugene gets now, other than jet airplanes and multiple flights in and out:
Eugene Airport Adding Frontier
by KEZI Staff
Published February 18, 2013
EUGENE, Ore. — Frontier Airlines has announced that they will be adding a new non-stop flight service between Denver, Colorado and Eugene starting May 16.
The initial price of the cheapest ticket for the flight will be $79 each way. Frontier says that the idea for adding the flight route is so that passengers will be able to use Denver as a connecting hub for longer domestic and international flights.
The flights will use a 138-seat Airbus 319 aircraft. KEZI 9 News will have more as the story develops.
You boys had forty years, and you’ve failed miserably at everything but pilling debt onto the working class of Coos County, and filling your pockets with Other People’s Money.
This county has to go around you guys, firmly planted in the Gravy Train, and get this county moving forward.
Take a drive up or down the coast and see for yourself. Other little communities are working hard to bring in business, and succeeding under very tough times.
This county has to stop listening to the very voices that brought us here.
PS, from Eugene airport:
“The airport also added two new non-stop routes and experienced two record travel days.” Business is up almost 4% .
While Bennetti and buds sit on the local airport board in Coos County, best they can do is ONE flight in and ONE flight out each day. What brilliant business people run this county, eh?
Speaking of treasuries and why schools are closing, no money, perhaps this plays a role al:

Facebook: Over $1 Billion in Profits, $0 in Taxes in 2012
– Andrea Germanos, staff writer
Facebook Inc., which made $1.1 billion in profits in 2012, did not pay any federal and state income taxes, but instead reaped $429 million in net tax refunds, according to a report released Thursday from Citizens for Tax Justice.
Its tax dodging was made possible by taking advantage of tax deductibility of executive stock options.
The company is also bringing $2.17 billion in additional tax-option tax breaks for future use, CTJ notes.
And never forget who obama met with when in Cali last time, these boys, not you, not me, not anyone in the working class, but Zukerberg.
Once again, the workers of this nation have to fight for decent wages, if any wages at all, while the corporate class continues to plunder what is left.
You’re pointing the finger at the wrong people, Themguys. Who makes the tax rules in this country? Congress. Who flanked Obama at the Tech Titan dinner? Who introduced Obama at his Town Hall meeting? Whether GE, BP or Facebook, greatful politicians take care of their friends. Only term limits and a ban on corporate political contributions and lobbyists will fix the widening problem of corruption in D.C.
Did we just agree on something??
Did you just agree that there is a widening problem of corruption? You think DC is the only place? Al, you know what happens when you wrap your lips around a hot tail pipe?
Al, no single individual should get the abuse that you receive here. This county has been good to many who are retired and bored. This county is sick. This casual observer does not see a meaningful plan for success; nor meaningful job descriptions; nor department managers being held accountable for failure; nor a team effort with departments understanding how their organization interrelates with all organizations; with a county government too complicated to manage; with unhappy people who should be sent walking. Is it possible that for small remuneration some of the talented individuals of the county who have bailed out major companies, or created jobs, or been a successful lawyer, will come forward and serve for a year or two if asked?
What a wonderful idea !
Markula – this blog is famous for abuse! It’s where many of these folks hone their skills for the Big Stage: the Commissioner’s meetings. And no two individuals have taken more abuse from this group than Cam and Fred. Regardless, those guys disclosed a lot of County warts that have been swept under the carpet for way to long. Thanks to them, the roadmap has been very well defined and it appears that Sweet and Cribbings will continue the crusade to guide the County back to financial stability.
Auto-correct. I meant Cribbins, not Cribbings.
Having a bad day, Themguys? No flowers? No card? No candy? Well, let me be the first to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day! Just remember: Things are never as bad you perceive, and you’re probably not as crazy as I believe. 🙂
All they need is for self-serving,grandiose-sounding free-loaders like al pettit to stop sucking profits from the public till ?
And then pretending to give a rat’s arse about the financial state of the county.
All they need is money. Lots of money.
They have a plan to get it. They will take yours…
Ah ha! Al finally agrees with the minority report!
A thought occured to me: if Zanni and Main gave up defending the Minority Report within a couple days of its release, why do you still insist on defending it? It makes one wonder if, perhaps, you have some personal level of investment in that document…
Don’t tell the walrus, Al, he still thinks all the county needs is an administrator
What’s worse, aghast! is that you actually believe the county doesn’t need an Administrator. I’m concluding that anyone who calls someone else a name like “walrus” probably doesn’t have enough common sense to get in out of the rain – let alone enough business experience to understand an org chart.
It would be nice if the county hired a counsel with a “strong background”.
