The Port of Coos Bay presentation was not sufficient to sway the council of Milwaukie, Oregon and they passed a resolution opposing coal trains through their city.
The Milwaukie City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday opposing coal trains through the city and calling for a review of the health and environmental impacts of exporting coal from Northwest ports.
The resolution’s passage was met with a standing ovation from the audience who packed the council chambers and spilled over into an adjacent room. Nearly 20 people spoke in front of the council, the overwhelming majority of them supporting the resolution. Just two people — Greg Peden of the Alliance for Northwest Jobs and Brock Nelson, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad — said they opposed it.
The resolution calls the coal trains that could run through the city incompatible with the its efforts to improve air quality and public health, and addresses concerns of coal dust, potential derailments, and environmental and traffic impacts.
There are responsible civic leaders left in the world.

Read today’s Register Guard article titled County puts off coal consideration. Why is the Port pushing for coal in Milwaukie and telling the Lane County commissioners to put the matter as a non priority as there is no coal project yet. Read former World paper editor now voice of the port Hamners statements and you will be convinced that she has recently gradatooted with honors from the Fred Messy school of confusospeak.
Damn, where will the lump for Messy’s Christmas stocking come from?
