Structure advisory committee members Al Pettit and Jon Barton do not like an idea floated by the governance advisory committee to hire an interim manager to take over some of the administrative duties of the county commissioners. Members of the governance committee are less convinced that hiring an administrator will heal all the county’s wounds and suggested trying the idea out first. Pettit and Barton both felt an “interim” manager would be constrained by the temporary status from making the changes they feel are necessary to change whatever it is they are trying to change (it hasn’t stopped our interim commissioners at all). “We should memorialize this position with a contract”, said Barton.
Additionally, the co-chairs didn’t think it would be prudent to hire from within and inexplicably few on the committee supported another idea from the governance committee of surveying the commissioners to develop a job description for a manager. Go figure…
Sheriff Craig Zanni, to his credit, advised the committee that when making sweeping changes as are being suggested by the group that without the support of the people, it simply will not work. After receiving some push back from Barton, Zanni repeated the same statement and he is correct.

Thanks to the sheriff, for keeping them sober. His advice was for the public as well as the committee members. The typist and the manager(Phyllis and Tom), really cleared up the confusion from the other meeting, and Al seems very focused on Curry county’s problems, and wants to make sure all the citizens get scared about public safety, parole officers are very worried about having to release convicts on our society, is that the last message he wanted to impress on the public, to help them agree to a CEO, their product?
Wait till after the elections, then the victors can claim a mandate from the people.Don’t let SCDC turn the county government into a model that the port is already using, We see how well that’s been working.
Reminder and Accountability are right, Barton is a shill, (although I don’t think he is paid by SCDC for his role as board chair), and I don’t know for sure who tugging his puppet strings but he is not a solitary actor. Privately, many of the people he works with admit to not liking him much and he doesn’t seem to carry any real street cred so it is hard to see how he has infiltrated so many boards. He wouldn’t make it in a bigger pond, that is probably why he is here
Are the dues to be a member of SCDC still $5,000 a year, or is it now $10,000 a year?
Many of the members of SCDC are tax collecting entities themselves. That means we’re all contributing to his and Sandy’s salary whether we want to or not, with our tax dollars.
If you pay a gas or electric bill your helping those company’s pay their dues to SCDC. If you do business with theworldlink, or the local hospital, your paying for Jon’s services. If your doing business with any business that has joined SCDC, then your paying Jon’s salary.
If SCDC would update their member list we could know more about how we’re all paying for Jon’s services, and who his collaborators and sponsors are…
If it were just so simple as pointing out that Jon has managed to infiltrate many other non-profits and government entities all along our coastline, especially ones having port businesses, (the list of organizations he’s not involved in would more likely be the shorter list), then it would be easier to dislodge his influence, but the reach he has developed goes into our state politics, the friends of Jon are doing very well for themselves as congressmen, senators, and at times even both of our last two governors. Democrats and republicans both suffer his influence. He must have one dandy diary stashed with names and dates recorded, or he’s just the local point man for their agenda, provided by the fossil fuel industries. I think he’s just the point man.
Jon Barton may have the same name as a native in our area but this Jon Barton is not from here. I am truly convinced he is bought and paid for by industry speculators who wish to trample our beautiful South Coast just like they trample third world countries. Citizens never come out ahead on these deals as we know. His purpose is not about bettering our area but about getting control and paving the way for this ruthless bunch of thugs.
There is not a group in town that Jon has not infiltrated or attempted to infiltrate. Once the wrong people are in control it can be difficult but not impossible. If you recall, SCDC has done this before. They once infiltrated the City of North Bend in an attempt to take control of this area. It all backfired on them in the end once the people realized what they had done. It also set this area back considerably because of the conflict and division it caused. This is all SCDC folks know how to do apparently. Look at their history.
Sheriff Zanni is exactly right but I doubt there is a high enough intelligence level there that these guys will listen.
If this was so all fired great there should be no worry about getting the support of the people first or having a public vote and debate….
When Jon Barton said he saw a lot of low hanging fruit, to pay for this latest scheme, you better believe him. Someones(plural) paycheck will be sacrificed for this cause. But that cost will mean nothing to the people at SCDC. Their rewards will be multiplied by the possibilities(contracts, permits, and resource control) that an inside person(CEO) will create for them, with the proper guidance, of course.
Just imagine another Jeffry Bishop doing his thing for Jon and the port, and when the heat turns up on their fraudulent ways, they will send him packing with a nice parachute for doing their bidding. That’s whats going to happen, unless?
For those of you that think they wouldn’t push for a CEO before the public has a chance to have elections, think again. Jon makes it clear that this board of commissioners has the power and authority to make it happen NOW. Jon and Al are going to continue to do a full court press on this agenda. There are those on the other committee that will do their part in selling the same plan. They will let Al “wow” the public after Jan 15th with his revised powerpoint presentation, and they will vote on it in February, and a hiring committee will be formed by these appointed board members, so Jon can place his man at the helm, before any elections are possible. They have no choice but to move fast, because we the public might vote in people that are competent, and spoil the plan to have SCDC run the county.
Try to watch this and pretend this was not predicted or even scripted when these committees were formed. Jon has a person waiting and ready to take the helm, thereby steering all the county’s power directly into the hands of SCDC members. Look who is at that meeting representing SCDC. (JJ Mccloud, Jon Barton, Tim Slater, Al Pettit, and good-ol Fred without the Mrs.The only one not on their team was the sheriff.
The lawyer and the secretary are just witnesses. Check out the room when the camera pans and see more SCDC gang members.
This is a conspired Coup on Coos County, right before our eyes.
They could have saved 300 hours of joint labor and just gave their recommendation of hiring a CEO right at the beginning of their public farce, as was told they would do, months ago.
Main let this happen by trying to fit-in with SCDC’s power structure, and letting these same people form-up and choose our representatives.
Take notice, the county clerk and the sheriff are trying to slow down these guys as best they can. If they cannot stop this pre-planned take-over of our county government before we can have elections, then we will be worse off for it.
Jon tells us he has many years of experience doing this sort of thing, over and over. He’s right, he does.
