In order for the public to evaluate the job performance of the sitting commissioners, indeed all elected and appointed officials, it might be prudent to prepare a questionnaire similar to the one sent to county employees from the structure advisory committee. If not a questionnaire, exactly, we could begin by requesting an accounting of the commissioners’ time, a detail of the purpose behind the time spent and the expected goals and or benefit to the public.
The public could go further and prepare a minimum performance detail expected from each commissioner and hold a quarterly evaluation to determine whether these goals are on track and meeting the goals set for them by the public or whether the commissioners need managerial guidance to fulfill the minimum standards.
Defining a jobs performance guide would be very useful for possible challengers in the upcoming primary elections next spring.
And what about the expense reports the BOC turns in. At least when Stufflebean and Whitty were travelling around the state they paid their own way – now Parry collects around $250 a MONTH for just meals – it’s all public record; ask accounting to see the VISA bills for a few months.
To themguys,
While that could be construed as one of his goals I think that fulfilling self serving goals should get a negative mark on his report card. 🙂
Did Fred get new office digs like he asked for?
Every candidate for public office regardless the level makes promises to the electorate that they never expect to have to be held accountable for, even those individuals appointed to fill vacated positions. Everyone has probably set goals in their personal lives that have gone unfulfilled, and it is no different in politics, but I think you could be on to something here, why shouldn’t our elected/appointed public servants have to “show their work” when it comes to promises. And they certainly shouldn’t expect to be treated any differently than any other employee when it comes to meeting job performance expectations. Even if it was just a performance score card it would be a great tool for them to know where they stand with the public (their bosses).
Great ideas. Ideas commissioner transparency would use in campaigning……
This ones at you Shep, I mean Curly…..LOL
like the pope mobile
Brilliant ideas.
All they need now is the Clown Car.
Main has blown it, he is as bad as Stufflebean and Griffith put together
The Coos County Commissioners will be held accountable at the next election. Every single one of them should be pitched into the street. I cannot begin to describe how disappointing Bob Main has turned out to be. Idiots arrogant with power as they kiss the feet of corporations plundering Coos County. They are shameless but there is nothing as humbling as being turned out of office. Find some decent candidates and we will raise money all over the state!
Yes, we could hold an open citizen meeting and then go into an executive session excluding all public officials
Mary, what an idea! Imagine, County Commissioners actually being ACCOUNTABLE for their time. I think this is a capital idea! In addition I think maybe the “Structure” committee might consider making the Commissioner positions a 2 year, rather than 4 year position. Either that or maybe a first time Commissioner should have an evaluation at the end of their first year (as every other County employee must) and if they cut the mustard in terms of ratings they may qualify for pay. If not their pay could be reduced or even taken away. This would need to be conducted by valid voters with their “ballots” secret of course.
Let’s study their actual hours of work. I know that there is one of our Commissioners that “volunteers” a week day to his regular radio program which is concerned with the outdoors. How is that helping the County? Is THAT on his regular job description? What about another commissioner that regularly goes home and works on his farm during regular public employee work hours? Is that kosher? I don’t think it would be regarded as such for County workers – nor should it? We have another who likes to take very exxtended vacations hunting, fishing etc. Does that provide food for the County jails to minimize expenses? I don’t think so! $60,000.00 + benefits should warrant more work shouldn’t it?
Too far out you say? Ok, let’s consider while we’re reorganizing “Non–paid” Commissioners very much like the “City” model where a “professional” manager is hired. This is appealing especially in view of the lack of expertise we are seeing from the present Board. Oh what shall we do? Maybe a citizen generated committee should be chosen to make up an evaluation form for the top officials on our County. What is your opinon folks?
