Commissioners Main and Parry resolved today to each pick four and jointly pick one for a total of nine citizens to sit on a selection committee to review candidates to replace the late Nikki Whitty. The committee will choose up to seven of the applications for an interview process consisting of nine to ten questions, similar to how Commissioner Parry was appointed to replace the late Andy Jackson.
Main indicated he may ask some of the same individuals on the earlier selection committee to sit in on this new one while Parry hopes to bring in new people and encouraged Main to do the same. Unlike the first panel there might be women on this one.
Interviews could take place as early as May 10 and once the top choice passes a thorough background check the candidate could be sworn in a week later.
While I am pleased that Cam Parry made the cut last time, I think the process is more of a dog and pony show. In the end, the two commissioners must agree on a candidate and handpicking a committee to select a couple for them to choose from is really just a pretense to make it appear as if the public is involved in the process.
The commissioners encouraged people interested in serving to submit their applications but I know three good candidates who will wait to see if the selection committee is as unrepresentative of the citizenry as the last one was before throwing their hat in the ring.
In 2012 all three commissioner positions will be up for grabs in the general election with the two appointed positions serving only two years instead of four.
Whoever wrote that editorial probably can’t read an ORS, they get lost in the subsections and have to start over.
Great point about the port, appointees every one
Damn it, fred! Like you I never read The World editorial unless someone points it out and then I am always sorry I did. You have to wonder, does the author of these pieces even live in Coos County, or Oregon for that matter?
First, the last committee was a seven member panel not five.
Damn shooting they should pick all new people – why should the same small unrepresentative group choose two thirds of our elected officials? That would be very dangerous…
Interestink! Read the World paper Editorial today? My neighbor believes that I should read them and he wastes no time sharing – I do not read the bird cage liner except for the sports section – a quality product of Finney and Gunther.
PLEASE Main and Parry – consider a male or female who has verifiable accomplishments related to the creation of a job during their lifetime – instead of considering professional politicians like some in that last batch of applicants. I note that Clark – my poop don’t stink, and Jim from Squim who has referred to some who disagree with him as “idiots”, have today – disregarding the fact that Oregon law anticipates that, from time to time there will be a need for an appointee to replace an elected individual and provides a means to do so – written telling the two surviving county commissioners how to conduct county business. Perhaps Frick and Frack should stick to the business of the World paper that seems to be taking a nose dive in circulation and advertising and leave the county business to others. What’s wrong with Dado being appointed county surveyor? Sure he was the only applicant. Had there been another special ($40,000) election, he would have probably been the only candidate. Someone over at the daily bird cage liner PLEASE suggest that these fellows learn the law of the land and instruct your APPOINTED leaders how to search the Iinternet for the Oregon Revised Stautes to answer their questions re county Surveyor and Assessor. If Frick and Frack are so concerned about appointees in local government, perhaps they can tell us why they choose to be silent and not challenge their pals at the Port – every one a political appointee.
