The muder trial of Nick McGuffin charged with the 2000 slaying of fifteen year old Leah Freeman is scheduled to start next month and discussions are underway to determine whether to change venue from Coos County. A venue change would delay the start of the trial.
Aghast, and Fred, your comments are fine examples of how this trial needs to be moved. Clearly the man has been set up as a scape goat. There is no evidence as pper the police themselves, in fact the only thing I heard them confirm (on the 20/20 show) was that any evidence was left all over the station and they dont even know if they have it all or what has been potentially tampered with. Also the fact that the police said there was no DNA is also a no brainer. It is very sad that a town who has been polluted with rumours upon rumours is so convinced.. Poor USA. Poor the McGuffin family and poor Leah Freeman.
This is one trial I would have liked to be a juror on but have not received a jury summons. The public will always second guess the verdict, no matter what the outcome, but a juror will have the confidence of seeing the evidence and being a part of the deliberations.
First, I believe that the downtown Coos Bay World paper is the worst excuse for a newspaper on this planet. I subscribe and do not read other than the local sports section – a quality product. Having said that, Mr. McGuffin is entitled to a jury of his “peers”. If the World paper reporting is factual – and if the World told me the sun would rise in the east tomorrow, I would verify that fact – Mr. McGuffin may not want a jury of his peers – anywhere. Although I am eligible to be exempt – I am scheduled for May jury duty. Six prior jury “duties” – two similar cases – six times jury foreman. I know one other person scheduled for May. If we who search for the truth and we who consider all facts are typical of local jurors, and if a muzzle is placed on the World paper during the trial, there should be no concern for a fair trial in Coos County commencing soon.
