Climate change and whale conservation are critical to the future of the planet. Diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks reveal that my country, the United States, bribed small island nations to agree to minimal carbon reductions “to work around unhelpful countries such as Venezuela or Bolivia” and to “neutralize, co-opt or marginalize these and others such as Nicaragua, Cuba, Ecuador”.
My country has also tried to interfere with conservation efforts to protect whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary including agreeing with Japan to sanction Sea Shepherd Conservation Society by demonstrating “the group does not deserve tax exempt status “
The cables haven’t changed the way my country is handling such critical matters as climate change and whale conservation but those members of the government responsible will someday be replaced by people in my generation and we ARE paying attention.
