The margin of recall was 60 percent to 40 percent, with 8,251 voting to recall Colby from office and 5,528 voting to support him, according to incomplete returns reported by the Coos County Elections Division. About 40 percent of the county’s registered voters took part in the mail election.
The election came about after a couple of rough years in the assessor’s office, which reached its nadir last summer when the county’s Board of Commissioners sent Colby a six-page letter threatening “future extraordinary measures” if he didn’t fix problems they said were plaguing his office.
Commissioners said clashes between Colby and his staff had led to tort and workers’ compensation claims, resignations and terminations that added up to more than $200,000 in legal fees and other expenses.
Colby consistently blamed his problems on disgruntled staffers unused to working hard. His strategy of criticizing public employees and union workers probably worked against him.
Mr. Colby was my sixth grade teacher and was the best teacher anyone could ever have. Yes, he was tough because he doesn’t tolerate BS and he made you work hard and he never allowed you to ever give up or make excuses. He brought out the best in everyone and made us all stronger as individuals and as a class and most of all, prepared us for LIFE, unlike any other teacher I have ever had. And if this makes him “bad” to work with and face recall well then you didn’t deserve him in the first place.
