We have an amazing group of gritty researchers in Coos County. Within just a couple of hours of requesting information about, well let’s just keep that a secret for now, I have received some amazing facts and contacts. This weekend I am speaking in Albany so will not be working on this for a few days but there is enough material for a book, I almost feel like WikiLeaks… people around here are fed up and mad.
How correct is all this?
This comment is in reference to a comment that Steve Pickering made at the Waste Advisory Committee held 3/31/10 at the Owens Building in Coquille. It is really a question about the fact: When trash from our County is deposited in any landfill, weather in Oregon or any state, our County or the municipality from which the trash originated from, becomes a partner in the liability for the environmental issues at that land fill site where trash is deposited.
That is a WOW. It was indicated that that was a known fact, by the planners, and the persons involve, but never an issue exposed to the public.
The gainers in this is the business owners, and the Cities who gain revenue through franchise fees, which the users pay. I don’t know if the County also charges the haulers a franchise fee.
Bottom line, with out the knowledge that the Citizen is on the hook for liability at land fills outside the County, the politicians have obligated the Tax payers of the County through their franchise deals that the Citizens have little to no input, or control over.
What of the Business owners, who are part of the larger picture of Corporate structure which may have liability, but their cost are funded from the user, who may not have a choice in the process.
Steve Allen made an off the cuff comment that we may be obligated to as many as 5 sites right now, as it were no big deal.

From what I understand the dailies are suffering everywhere while the weeklies are getting by. Walworth claims they have a big enough internet presence to supplement their print side – who knows, I never notice their advertising but then to tell you the truth, I never notice the ads on my site either.
Still, it is good to know there are some small papers with big sticks around.
They always go for the daily publications and render the weekly short shot. Happy they can still survive under such pressure. Big guys have a big mouth and a big foot print. Little guys speak softly and carry a very big stick.
For a while I was hopeful they were making some improvements but my hope was short lived. There is another news source in the county – Coast Lake News up in Lakeside and The Sentinel. The Sentinel has taken some gutsy positions and taken lots of heat for doing it and apparently the Lakeside paper has too. Small independents survive on ad revenue just like The World but manage to still do pretty well with a tiny budget.
If they can do it, so can The World
The only thing The World Newspaper is worth is: Wrapping up dead fish and then the lead from the news print would probably pollute the fish and render the fish unedible. Not only that, the newspaper would add stink to the fish!
I was just going to post an article from the front page of the World yesterday, but decided I’d let your readers figure it out themselves, here’s the title: “Pa. city’s profits go up in smoke” .
It’s an article about the capital city of Pa., almost going broke because they tried to manage their own garbage, and now they’re almost bankrupt. Gee, leading story a little? Think we should be very concerned that a city went bankrupt over garbage?
Hell, you can go from being garbage collector to a throne in City Hall with a locked door and access to everyones’ business in Coos Bay !!
It’s a gold mine isn’t it?
We need some big guns here, we needed them years ago, and all we got were cheerleaders. Cute, but not very effective in telling the truth.
It’s a shame a couple of women, without compensation of any kind, have to fight these bastards by themselves. Of course there are many many more of us supporting them in their efforts, but it’s still a dam shame these few citizens have to take on the entire ‘mob’ in Coos County don’t you think?
To Oh Danny Boy: I’m not hearing your pipes from my glen in the gorse.
To themguys:
Bitch-slapped is a very good description of what happened here. ORC and Clark pushed me too far this time. I have called in the BIG guns now and I can’t wait to see Clarkie and Danny boy squirm like the worms that they are. This is far from over.
What it is paid to print. The weekend issue was by far the worst example of crony-capitalism I’ve personally ever seen, but then I’ve not seen the rag which covered for the Massey Mine either, my guess is we here in Coos County wouldn’t be all that shocked would we?
How Clark spoke about the citizens who unfortunatly thought they were retiring to the beautiful Oregon Coast, only to find this happening in their neighborhood ! Clark bitch-slapped every one of them in the name of ORC. THAT was a shock even to those of us who don’t expect much in the first place. I’m only hoping this county pushed the citizens of the county too far this time. Years and years of predation will do that.
Based upon the flood of emails this morning regarding the local paper it would be safe to say The World newspaper reports what it is told, not what it has learned.
