Normally I wouldn’t address a topic like this here but this represents a uniquely weird side of Americana and offers such an affront to the phrase ‘heathy competition’. What are they teaching these young girls?

(hat tip/Andrew Sullivan) and, yes, I am inclined to agree this borders on child abuse.
I think mistydonna hoped to promote the book, which clearly shows some fine photography and while I do not want to diminish the value of the art, like you I feel child beauty pageants as depicted in the gallery represents a side of America I prefer not to know about or support.
I tried to log on, link doesn’t work.
M, you don’t have TV. I do. I’ve stopped on these ‘pageants’ from time to time.
I agree, I believe this whole scene to be abusive to little girls.
They have a class for infants, can’t even walk, and their mothers paste ribbons and bows on the poor little droolers.
In my opinion, this is fueled by mothers who are trying to capture some youth or beauty or something, because this is NOT healthy for children.
It’s unbelievable the money these families spend on these poor little things. Sometimes it erupts into fits and tears and screaming. It’s horrendous.
The book is actually really informative about the different view of child pageantry. Supplies beautiful pictures and a little guide for dressing. I really suggest others to browse through the book to learn more about it! Check out her website for a preview: http://www.highglitz.com/gallery/index.html.
