Which may explain the sudden and inexplicable resignation of Sarah Palin.
FURTHER UPDATE: Okay, I’ve now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure as Mayor. Both structures, it is said, feature the “same windows, same wood, same products.” Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.
The BRAD BLOG has not been able to receive confirm from any federal sources on this. Our information comes from local Alaskans who follow Palin, and who have been keeping an eye on this for some time, while keeping it quiet at the request of federal investigators.

I like Sarah Palin. I admire Sarah Palin. I think Sarah Palin would have made a great vice president. I have repeatedly and vigilantly defended Sarah Palin against the liberal smear machine, and will continue to do so. But this resignation REEKS. Either there is a scandal brewing, or she is, as many speculate, quitting to run for president. In the latter case, HUGE mistake. No one likes a quitter, and abandoning her state runs in stark contrast to the image she has cultivated. Most Republican strategists suggested she go back to Alaska after the presidential election, keep her head down, and quietly bone up on foreign affairs while running her state like a fiscally-conservative, tax-cutting, oil-drilling conservative. It will take more than a quick, pre-holiday press conference to explain why she’s done this. Who knows? Maybe her reasons are sound, and we just don’t know them yet. And maybe it will prove a brilliant strategy. Only time will tell…but today, it pains me to say, it doesn’t look good.
Meanwhile, Andrew Sullivan over at The Daily Dish seems to offer up that this is just another eccentric move of an already affirmed eccentric politician, albeit with reservations.
when you accept a veep nomination, and ask people to contemplate putting you in the most powerful job in the world, you just have to suck it up and tell the truth. That’s the awful price of public life. If she had told her story at the start, I think she would have earned much more support and admiration
No one has ever accused Palin of good judgment. Even the provocative, beauty queen photo above in shorts featuring the American flag and the military family blue star signifying her son serving in Iraq is just plain tacky.
Nevertheless, she has just inked a big book deal and maybe going out of office with a bang like this will boost her book sales.
UPDATE From The Daily Beast
SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin’s snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice’s Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.
Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few “buddies,” according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.
Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an additional $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.
