The World reports that Carl Foster has been upgraded to fair condition. Regretably, Foster will never improve enough to breathe on his own or tend to even the simplest needs.
To put Foster’s injury into perspective, Christopher Reeve of Superman fame suffered a C5 fracture. Reeve lived nine years after his injury and his longevity was a tribute to modern medicine and a daily regimen of expensive therapy. Carl Foster suffered a C2 (the strongest cervical vertebrae) fracture, much higher and exponentially worse than Reeve’s injury.
The 5’4″ Foster was not expected to regain consciousness much less survive and the family were advised to get everyone together to consider turning off life support. Modern medicine and a strong will to live have prevailed for the time being and his daughter, Kaycee, still has some time with her father.
