When my oldest son, a Marine, left for war and crossed the border from Kuwait into Iraq in March 2003 I started writing my conscience. After two tours that young combat veteran’s mother is now an ardent peace activist and advocate for social, environmental and economic justice.
MGx has matured since those early vents and ramblings and now covers relevant and important local and regional matters in addition to national and global affairs.
I’m so sorry that you are so down, mgix, and themguys. In the first place we are not going to throw out the system, M, and I think you know that. The reason it’s gotten in such dissaray , is that the Republicans have been virtually in control for almost three decades. If we give up on the Democrats they will stay in control. It’s foolish to give up.
Although the Democrats don’t have the numbers to pass any meaningful legislation in the senate, they do control the agenda, and the Republicans haven’t been able to pass any of their fowl stuff either… that’s what I meant by stopping the bleeding. Until the Democrats can increase their majority, I’m afraid you will see more of the same. I am dismayed by the Democratic leadership, also, but I’m a long way from throwing in the towel. And as Forest Gump would say ” and that’s all I’m going to say about that”. Good night.
I just firmly believe we have to take a stand and let the Dem Party know that we will no longer support them. Period. I say that with a heavy heart and a lot of fear, but I see no way for me to continue to support and vote for people who turn around and continue the insanity. Other than a few token outrages on the steps of Congress, I see no movement in the Dem party to stop the carnage in Iraq, Afghan., or the suspending of Habeas Corpus, or the suspending of Posse Comatatus, so tell me, who is going to get us back our Constitution protections, when the Dem. leadership is running scared from any perception they are weak on defense. I am no longer buying their excuses. Period. And the sooner more Democratic voters tell the party enough is enough, they will continue to vote to continue the assault on the american people. If there are no consequences to their behavior, they have no need to rish anything, after all, we’re just talking about the suspension of the Constitution for Christs’ sake! We all need to be honest about the role the Dem leadership, even the whole party in Congress is playing. They are not, nor will they fight to restore the constitution. Nancy Pelosi in her first speech as Speaker announced: Impeachment is off the table, blathered on about all the time it would take, yada, yada, yada, now what exactly has she been spending those 1 and a half days a week in DC? What earth shattering legislation have they even presented? Harry whines constantly,
“what can we do to get along?” F you, Harry, any one of us can tell you: there IS no getting along with the neocons. They know it, but they throw crumbs out to their loyal Dem supporters to continue the charade. We all need to accept the reality of where we are. I never thought I would see such things in this lifetime. Breaks my heart.
It looks like you are ganging up on me, and picking and choosing items that you think proves your case, but looking at the whole picture , in my many years of observation , I have never seen a bigger ideological spread between the two parties, and I don’t understand anybody that can’t see that. While your at it go back and itemize all the the things that went on during the first six years of this administration . If the Democratic controled congress, has done nothing else, they have stopped the bleeding, and will right the bad things that went on then, when they get the numbers . In the last twenty six years the democrats have contolled all three branches of government for just two, and they have controlled one branch for the last nine months and you all expect miracles.
Mgix, we don’t have a parlimentary system, and we will never have one… how in the world did you come up with that idea. And trying to adopt a three or four party system to our form of government would be utter chaos…. think about it. And for you to think about a third party candidate to run for president would be even more foolish, for at best they would be a spoiler. I will say it again for the umpteen time, the best action is to get involved, and make the Democratic party more progresive. I know it’s frustrating to see nothing positive happening, and I can assure you that’s the way it will be until 2009. But I am confident that the next election will see the democrats in controll of all three branches, and I think with a majority in congress that will allow them to move their agenda….. then you can legitimatly complain.
I remember just a few months ago, on a Sunday morning “news” show, watching Harry Reid answer a question and responding that “the american people do not want to change the financing of elections”. Uh, excuse me, this was after they took power. Now Mr. Buck, with this kind of leadership in the Senate, who is he listening to? You? I don’t think so, yet he’s the head of the party you send money to. It’s a farce from top to bottom, and it scares the hell out of me. Did you see todays news where the Fed. government is pushing through a program where EVERY person buying a ticket to fly anywhere IN the US, or in or out of the US will have to be vetted through the Fed. gov. before they are issued a ticket to fly? Think about that one, Mr. Buck, what does that tell you? Gee, why aren’t those Dems telling you about this? Why aren’t they telling you about their participation in these horrendous betrayals of the Constitution? Because they know it’ll piss you off, so they just don’t tell you. And on a local level, how about the bill your local Dem Arnie Roblan hand carried to Salem to make sure Northwest Naturals or whatever the name is of the local gas company using the pipeline already here, doesn’t have to pay taxes on their use of the pipeline? It was done under cover of night, Mr. Buck, did the literature the local Dems send you every month tell you about that one? Or how about that other fine Dem Verger, paving the way for the LNG plant, under cover of bringing shipping into the Bay? Great Dems, tell me how they’re any different than Kruse or any of the other Reps? I’m sorry, but the proof is in the pudding. Please tell me what your feeling is about what Roblan just did to the local taxpayers who are paying for that gasline? Why did Roblan need to sneak around and hope no one noticed. He’s carrying water for the South Coast Development Corp., that’s why, and he didni’t think his local Dem supporters would do a gawd damned thing about it, and guess what? They won’t.
How can you say a two party system worked for 200 years when it allowed our current state of affairs to occur? A truely working system would never have allowed this to deteriorate at all. What do you have against a parliamentary system, buck?
I agree with themguys and noam chomsky, we are a one party system and that party doesn’t speak for me
There you go again, saying there is no difference. I think it’s you that haven’t been paying attention. Yes I think Clinton made a mistake in getting Nafta et all passed,
but, among other things, he righted our economic ship by getting a tax increase passed. But getting back to the corporatism thing. As the election system is set up now , Democrats have to take corporate money to be competitive, if they didn’t they would’nt be in the game ie. Dennis Kucinich. Every one of the Democratic candidates for president say that getting rid of corporate money in campaigns is high on their agenda. It is their goal, and this goes especially for John Edwards, to make elections publicly funded. And when this happens, when corporations can no longer buy candidates, then and only then will we kill corporatism. To my knowledge not one Republican candidate has even mentioned this as a problem.
Mr. Buck, Bill Clinton (a Dem last I saw) sold the American worker down the river, period! Nafta and Cafta and all the rest, if you don’t think that was the biggest corporate give away in the history of this country, you weren’t paying attention. Please, yes, the founders knew a two party system would work. Unfortunately, we don’t have a two party system any longer, and I don’t know why anyone would think there’s any difference at all. You have a ONE party system, and I’m personally offended to hear adults talk like we still do. We don’t. It’s over, and there’s no one in DC who is going to change it one iota.
There is no one in DC who will come to our defense, not one.
I’ll give my money to the homeless on the streets of Coos County. They can use it. Corporate interests are taking care of the politicians, they don’t need or care about our nickels and dimes. Tell me, Mr. Buck, where did Hillary get her 50 million? Who bought her ass off, not you and me, and she will do the bidding of her corporate pimps, just as any professional prostitute on the streets of DC.
The people will end up in the streets, but not until “they’re eating the paint from their walls”. But it’s coming.
Right on magix, how do you propose doing this , other than what I just said. I can’t see much, if anything being accomplished until after the next election, the way things stand. Are you planning a third party? and when will that party take over?, come on magix, get real. Jefferson, and Madison put a lot of thought into setting up the two party system, and I think it was a good thing, and worked well for over 200 years. Comming from one of the smartest persons I’ve ever known, I’m really surprized at what you just said.
( I wish you would install spell check opn your blog)
Maybe, buck, just maybe it is time for a change. Inevitable change may as well be now as later, why drag it out? A true democracy would not be limited by two parties.
George Bush has hastened the decline of this nation so lets just put it out of its misery and start anew.
Nothing we can do can make it perfect, I’ll agree, but if you think that the Democrats are not closer to the true progressive views, and you are willing to give it all back to the Republicans… then all is lost. Too much was expected of the Democrats because they got a slim majority in the house and none whatsoever in the senate. If we get a Democratic president and a clear majority in both houses, you will see corporatism fade, which is what we are talking about, right.
Come on, Mr. Buck, are you serious about sending money? The corporate press has already told the Amarakan people who is running, it’s over, why throw good money after bad? And the Dems are NOT innocent in the selling out of America, Mr. Buck. They have gone right along with it, if they were serious about changing things they’d be screaming their heads off, even if they can’t override a veto, they can still scream about it. They won’t fight for a gawd damned thing, period. What did Congress do last week? Not a damn thing. Remember when Pelosi said, “we’re working five days a week!”? Remember that whopper? Well, Mr. Buck, they work Tuesday afternoon to Thursday noon, period, then they take six weeks off, then they work a few days, then they take another six weeks off. PLEASE do not tell me what they’ve done, it ain’t jack shit.
Well, you’re right, the media have pretty much selected the candidates, and don’t forget who owns the media, now. I don’t see how the democrats are complicit in this. But, it’s the voters in Ohio, and New Hampshire that will choose our candidates, and they haven’t made up their mind’s yet. According to the editor of the Des Moines Register over half are undecided. You can still influence the election of candidates even though it will all be over by the time we get to vote in Oregon. Send money. If Edwards can win in Ohio, and he has a good chance, and can come in second in New Hampshire, and the win in south Carolina, he will go all the way, despite Hillary’s strong national standings. That’s my scenario , and I’m sticking with it.
Regrettably, the corporate owned media appear to have already chosen the candidates – with the complicity of your beloved Dems, Buck. How do you expect to be able to vote for Edwards past the primary?
All the Democratic candidates have talked about the dangers of corporatism, but the most outspoken one is John Edwards. As a lawyer he made his fortune suing corporate wrong doings. He does not take contributions for his campaign. He has vowed to fight against the onslaught of corporate influence in our government. Vote for John Edwards

No we don’t have a parliamentary system but maybe we should throw out this old system and start anew, that was my point!
America is gone, buck, so lets start over

You are right to bring up Roblan, as well as Verger with her $60 million dredging coup. They have both contributed to catastrophic climate change – read my post here http://mgx.com/blogs/2007/10/14/climate-change-accelerated-by-industrial-growth-in-china-and-india/
