Last Thursday I attended a meeting in Portland with FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein. It seems that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin wishes to fast track a merger application between Samuel Zell and The Tribune Company by year’s end. One reason given for rushing this through is to avoid the issue cluttering up the presidential primary season. Another attendee has a piece up at Kos about this matter
Public hearings will be held in Seattle, November 2 and each speaker is limited to two minutes. Will explain more about media consolidation and the effects on Oregon, in particular, rural Oregon later.
Additionally, the FCC will not be probing several major phone carriers over the domestic wiretapping scandal
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin turned down a congressional request for an investigation as a top intelligence official concluded it would “pose an unnecessary risk of damage to the national security,” according to a letter National Intelligence Director Michael McConnell sent to Martin on Tuesday.
