When my oldest son, a Marine, left for war and crossed the border from Kuwait into Iraq in March 2003 I started writing my conscience. After two tours that young combat veteran’s mother is now an ardent peace activist and advocate for social, environmental and economic justice.
MGx has matured since those early vents and ramblings and now covers relevant and important local and regional matters in addition to national and global affairs.

Don’t give up hope yet. I’m working on a solution. I believe the 3rd party could the key but in a different way then trying to buck the the 2 party system. I’m thinking more of using it as leverage like lobbying power, with votes instead of money. Warm bodies
Maybe Nader messed things up for the Democrats but like the rest of us it was not because of ego but principle. But, Maybe that wasn’t the quite the right way to do it.
Really, after reading Pepe Escobar this afternoon, I am pretty certain that there is no hope for America as we have known and loved it. Change will be forced upon us
It’s pretty hard to fight the supreme court. But you are right about the Democrats more gentile manner, they just don’t play hardball , like the Republicans. But look where their Tom Delay, and Jack Abrahmoth (sp)tactics have gotten them. I think in the long run the Democrats more gentile manner will win out.
Yeah? Well if Al Gore had fought for the recount, or an investigation or one damn thing, maybe we could have had the election. He turned and walked away, just as Kerry did, right? Will you give us that? The Dems lost every election because they will NOT fight! They allow the Repubs to frame every frickin issue, and I am sick of it. They cower and wait for the Repubs to tell th Amarakan public that the Dems are this or the Dems are that, and all the while the Dems cower and piss on themselves. If you’ve ever been in a protracted legal battle, Buck, you know, you will NEVER win on the defense, NEVER. Name one issue in the last eight years, the Dems have come out and LED on, just name one? That they actually WON something.
The Repubs ran Congress when they were in power, and they run Congress now that they’re out of power, right?
Hey, don’t attack me, I was just stating a fact. If Ralph, had not been such an egoist , he would have taken his name out of contention during the last week of the 2000 election, as many were urging him to do, he had made his point, and knew he was not going to get more than 5%. Al Gore would be our president now, and I know for sure that we would not be in the mess we are in now. There probably would not have even been an attack on 9-11, as the Clinton administration was on top of Bin Laden, and they even tried to pass that information on to the Bush Administration, but of course, they would have none of it. Third parties just don’t work. John Frohnmayer just killed our chance of beating Gordon Smith by entering the race as an independent. Smith is considered very vulnerable , but now with the liberal Frohnmayer to split the vote, Smith will be a shoo in.
If it is true that there is no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans … then I say there is no hope for America… absolutely none.
I just can’t resist. Mr. Buck, do you not realize true democracy means we all have a chance at “the prize”? Why do you allow your party to limit who can run to just ONE party? And, kind sir, it IS ONE PARTY now. There is absolutely no difference. The Dems control the Capitol building now, they set the rules there, and an old preacher just got pounded and a broken leg. Please, do not be so naieve as to believe the Dem leadership is not calling the shots there. Pelosi herself has ordered the arrest of protesters instead of sitting down with them. Please, Magix, correct me if I’m wrong on that. The line is so blurred it’s hard to remember. Buck, there is absolutely NO difference between the Dem and Repub parties, get used to it. You can put lipstick on a pig………….
Ralph Nader did not start the war in Iraq – that is really beneath you, buck. Congress allowed that war, the American people allowed it, not Ralph Nader.
Look at some of the parliamentary systems – if you garner 5% of the vote you have a voice in the government… two parties are polarizing as evidenced by the exchanges above

Not being a Democrat or a Republican & one of those people that voted for Nader on principle… He should of gotten more votes BTW but his own party(that I am no longer a member of) turncoated on him. not only did a Republican get in the White House anyway, by turning on their candidate the Green party lost all their hard won momentum. A third party would have to be a party of real principles & that would take some doing. Not to mention the money problem. Well this year again there doesn’t seem to be much to pick from…So it will probably come down to picking the lesser of two evils. The other alternative is not to vote & I’m not that discouraged yet.
See, your still not realistic. Third party candidates are spoilers, pure and simple. Ralph got over 60,000 votes , and even by Bush’s count he only won by less than 600 votes. Don’t you remember the special council that spent 40 million looking into the Clinton’s land dealings and came up empty handed. $40 million? really? Where did the money come from I wonder…
You are right, name recognition means alot, & you are also right that John Edwards has more substance then Hillary Clinton.
& taking corporate money might be playing the “game” but what of is the real value of the game?
Politics are only worth the ideology they are built upon. What are Corporate politics worth in the long run? That is what we should be asking ourself.
Didn’t you read what I said a few comment’s back… The Dem’s will work towards changing the rules. It’s high on their agenda.
I can’t believe what you just said. If we loose the majority, and don’t get the presidency, then it won’t be just the Democrats that loose. The consequence will be severe for everybody…. I don’t want to live through another four years of what the Republicans will deal us, and I don’t think you do either.
They do not have to play the game with the old rules unless stubborn old curmudgeons are unwilling to push for a change in the rules. Two hundred plus years of the old game has us stuck in a war in a distant land – it is new rules time and the old politicians can ‘stay home’ because the American people are not going to play with them any more.
Here you have it from Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), speaking to anti-war activists (via The Hill):
“You folks should go after the Democrats. . . . I’d hate to lose the majority, but I’m telling you, if we don’t stand up to our responsibility, maybe that’s the lesson to be learned.â€
Hillary, is a front runner because of name recognition… most people have not paid any attention to the election yet. In poll after poll of the democrats that have been paying attention , it is John Edwards, that is leading the pack by a large margin, and Hillary comes in a distant third.

Sorry, but the Democrats as long as they accept money from Corporations,(no matter what their noble intentions are), makes them indebted. I believe this logic is partly what makes “Hillary” so unsavory to the American people. We have not forgotten the old Dirty land dealings, etc…& to think she is the front runner candidate for the Democratic party. How did she get in that position?
Common sense tells us, it wasn’t from not accepting Corporate monies.
Corporate politics blurs the line between red & blue.
There is no ideology anymore.
That is certainly true, about corporation power, and Democrats are guilty, although not to the extent, of Republicans. This all stems because of our election laws that allow corporations to donate huge sums, and of course expect something in return. If the Democrats didn’t except their money , along with the Republicans none could get elected. To a man, and yes a woman, the Democratic candidates have vowed to work toward changing this system, and go to a public supported one. When we are able to take the money out of election the corporation will loose much of their power. The Democrats are also on record to get more limitation on lobbyist. You don’t hear anything like that from Republicans.
Anyone who knows you buck, knows you are not delusional. STUBBORN perhaps but not delusional. concerned citizen is right, we are dealing with governance by corporation board rooms and profit margins… the governed need to withdraw consent from this form of governance –

While I certainly don’t claim to have superiour brain power, I have an opinion & a theory like everyone else for what the problem is…
I think corporate power, with their capacity to manipulate electoral & legislative politics has a stranglehold on American politics,( i.e. the two party system) Corporate giants have enough power to limit political debates & policy choices & enough wealth to control the entire field of candidates in electoral campaigns. If you ask me this is probably where the problem of the impotency in the democratic party ultimately lays.
Corporation giants fill the voids left by weakened labor unions & underfunded overwhelmed social programs. Their economic power & their “solutions” to a particular problem is welcomed by beleaguered Republicans & Democrats alike. Republicans welcome them with open arms. Democrats not so open armed I give them that, but helpless & impotent do anything about it, anyway.
Unfortunately,The “public good” is not even a factor in Corporation politics.
I just think that what we saw on u tube is a reflection of the arrogant attitude coming from the white house, and it permeates the whole area if not the whole country. New leadership in our head office will bring a new attitude to this whole country. George would like nothing better than to be able to establish marshal law.. lets not give him the opportunity.
The two party system has worked well, for 200 years, and to change it now would not be feasible, and would be chaotic to try.
I am not cool headed, I mourn the dead and wounded in Iraq as much as you. I have shed my share of tears over that insane action.
But , I truly believe I am more practical in my thought process than some of you who admittedly have much more brain power. Do you think I’m delusional?

We have to work hard to see that this administration is not followed by more of the same . This would not happen under a Democratic administration…yes even a Clinton one.
As you have mentioned before it is all about control through intimidation. Weapons bristling, electronics humming, leather glistening, it is all posturing and attitude and control and authority. Sometimes that authority and the power it instills in these officers gets out of hand, way out of hand.
Ultimately citizens will revolt against such strong arming and stop playing by ‘their’ rules.
When I visited the Pentagon last September for the ‘open house’ with several Iraq veterans and Vietnam veterans. The young Iraq vets, combat vets, were wearing their Iraq Vets Against the War t-shirts.
As we approached the security table the Pentagon police sargeant just went off on them … he was red faced, spittle flying from his mouth yelling at these kids because he found information about depleted uranium (DU) in their packs. (One of these soldiers walks with a cane because of a bone degenerative disease caused by his exposure to DU).
Now these guys were not misbehaving, did not speak back to him or act rudely in any way but he threatened to arrest them if they left any DU flyers. His attitude was meant to be intimidating but was more comical than anything else. I mean he was yelling at Irag combat vets for goodness sake … after what they have seen and done no lame ass police sargeant is going to make them ‘nervous’. Watch the video Mr. Rogers, it clearly shows Rev. Yearwood being thrown to the floor, piled on, and then HE is charged with assaulting a police officer. And these goons knew they were being photographed, they’re so sure of themselves at this point, they don’t even care if they’re caught assaulting a US citizen waiting in line for a hearing.

yeh, I think everybody saw that, but why?… there must be something that we didn’t see to provoke a the cops. Where was this, anyway, I’m sure there is a story about this.

THAT should scare all of us.
I’m sorry, did I miss something… I don’t get it
