A new CBS Poll indicates that 77% of the country believe the Iraq occupation is going badly. 75% polled believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and 66% believe the troops should be pulled out completely or levels reduced. Hopefully this will translate into public pressure being exerted upon Congress to resolve the Iraq conflict.
Since the surge Iraq has claimed the lives of 329 Marines and soldiers making this the deadliest quarter since my son crossed into Iraq from Kuwait in March 2003. Public complacency is killing our troops.
hi! (as you can see, I’m logged back on.)
I’ve noticed a few issues lately where the statistics showed the public overwhelmingly disapproved of something. But, that doesn’t seen to be anough to cause a change. Just disapproving or reconizing a problem exists is just the first step toward creating the atmosphere for change. People have to be willing to step out there, & get involved, & put in personal time & effort.
Magix is a very good example of a person who does just this.
Our kids, mine at least, enlisted believing they could rely upon the judgment of their leaders. Everyone of them is willing to die for their country but each of them have the right to expect their sacrifice to be carefully and thoughtfully spent.
John, my son, spent most of his second tour securing four miles of highway, ‘Route Michigan’, the purpose of which was to keep supply routes open to feed the Marines guarding the highway. I believe our kids are dying for their government, not their country.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family… I don’t know if I would be able to survive another tour if my boy is called back. Good luck
Even though I do not agree with you at all on the CPD issues, I completely agree with you on the IRAQ issues and I commend you on your efforts with the war. I have supported you on your writings on this issue.
My son has also done 2 tours to Iraq and my daughter in-law is on alert to go. They have a brand new baby and I hate the fact that she may have to go and leave her new born for a year.
Yes, they both signed up knowing that this was part of the job…but they didn’t expect to be a part of another Vietnam.
In the first four years of Vietnam, 1,866 GIs were killed. We exceeded that number in Iraq before the completion of year three. Advanced life saving techniques prevented this number from being even higher.
In year five of Vietnam it was over 5,000, then 12,000, 14,000 until almost 60,000 died. Iraq is on a fast track to exceed those tolls and the number disabled, my son being one, is in the tens of thousands.
Statistically it is kids from rural America that are fighting the fight and rural America needs to pressure their representatives.
I do agree with you on this. If you’re leading the country, you’re supposed to be representing the people. When most of the nation is against the war, why continue to fight?
